IGN: Elvis: '68 Comeback Special Review
And the stage was set for the King of Rock and Roll to make a comeback, which he absolutely did in December of 1968 on an NBC soundstage.
Originally titled simply Elvis, but renamed through common usage (much like the Beatles' "White Album") Elvis' '68 Comeback Special, this program is a perfect metaphor for Elvis' career on the whole-- by turns impossibly cool and unbelievably cheesy.
In addition to the great performances, what makes this special cool is that Elvis and his band engage in a lot of "impromptu"-- how impromptu it really was is a matter of some debate-- chatter about the old days, and Elvis clowns around quite a bit, as Elvis was wont to do.
