Morant emigrated to Australia in either 1883 or 1884 and settled in outback Queensland.
Morant's unit was very successful in eliminating roving bands of enemy commandos from their area, forcing the Boers to transfer their activities to the Bandolier Kop area, on the northern fringe of the Spelonken.
Morant's detractors conventionally depict the Carbineers as war criminals, rogue soldiers and cold-blooded murderers who were little better than the Boer guerrillas they fought against and that they were fairly tried and executed for killing unarmed prisoners of war and civilians.

Breaker Morant - Synopsis - Moviefone
Breaker Morant is one of the most acclaimed Australian films, telling a powerful tale of wartime betrayal and injustice.
Henry "Breaker" Morant (Edward Woodward) is an Englishman living in Australia at the end of the 19th century.
Acting under orders from his commanders, Morant oversees the execution of several Boer prisoners; it turns out that one of them was German, and in order to keep the peace with Germany, Britain agrees to courtmartial Morant and two other soldiers, sentencing two to death and one to life imprisonment.

The setting for this film is the Boer War (1899-1902), also called the Anglo-Boer War, and called by the Boers, the English War.
The subtle intensity of his portrayal is seen in the twitching and narrowing of the eye, the tremor in his hand as he smokes a cigarette, the slight catch in his voice as the futility of the situation begins to dawn.

But it should not be forgotten that Harry "Breaker" Morant was really a war criminal, justly convicted for his role in the murder of Boer prisoners then executed by firing squad, according to Australian historian Dr Craig Wilcox.
He described Morant as a romantic figure, an Australian bushman with a bottle of liquor and a poet with a cheap edition of Byron's poetry in his saddlebags.
The court martial was conducted in January 2002 with Morant, Handcock and Witton condemned to death.

 Kershen on Breaker Morant
Breaker Morant is the beautifully scripted and photographed film of the court-martial of these three Australian officers by a British Court-Martial.
Morant admitted disdainfully that the execution did not look like the Court-Martial, but he reminded the Court that war is not a Court-Martial and soldiers do and are expected to use their British Enfield Caliber 303 rifles to kill the enemy.
Breaker Morant is a beautiful anti-war statement--a plea for the end of the intrigues and crimes that war entails.

However, Morant didn't follow orders because a duty of the leader is to make sure his outfit operates under the rules and code of the country's armed forces.
As the film is made from the perspective of the British government and the Australians that were helping them, it unfortunately chooses to support that side's justification of the war without considering the Boer's.
Although the film never gets into this, most prominently the British justification was the protection of their prospectors mining what would have been Boer territory of the richest source of gold the world had seen at that time.

Harry "Breaker" Morant, Peter Handcock and George Witton are accused of the murder of one Boer prisoner, the subsequent murders of six more, and Morant and Handcock are accused of the sniper-style death of a German missionary, the Rev. Hesse.
Morant's execution of the Boer prisoners was revenge for the mutilation and death of his friend and commanding officer, Captain Hunt.

 "Breaker Morant" by Stephen Crafts
The film centers on three Lieutenants — an expatriate Briton, "Breaker" Morant (Edward Woodward), and two Australians, Handcock (Bryan Brown) and Whitton (Lewis Fitz-Gerald) — who have volunteered to fight for the British in 1901 against the Boers (Dutch settlers in South Africa fighting against British control).
BREAKER MORANT overlooks the political and cultural similarities between Boer in South Africa and Australian in Australia.
BREAKER MORANT denies the Boers any valid historical force; this is vital (or, more accurately, deadly) for the film's conception of justice.

 The Age Education
The film follows many of the usual conventions of the war film, such as the crucial role of mates and comrades and the questions surrounding the role of war, but it does offer some variations.
In this film there is no absolute culprit, and while it is easy to be critical and condemn the British military for using Morant (Edward Woodward), Handcock and Witton as scapegoats, we must acknowledge and carefully consider the ``evidence'' presented by Morant and Handcock during their court-martial.
While it is understandable that Morant would want to avenge the mutilation of his friend, the audience is forced to question the nature of the revenge and whether the murders of Boer prisoners and the German missionary, Hesse, as part of that act are equally understandable and acceptable.

 Drama Films
Although dramatic films have often dealt frankly and realistically with social problems, the tendency has been for Hollywood, especially during earlier times of censorship, to exonerate society and institutions and to blame problems on an individual, who more often than not, would be punished for his/her transgressions.
Two films from different eras that dealt with the problems of the mentally ill and conditions in mental institutions were Anatole Litvak's The Snake Pit (1948) with tormented Olivia de Havilland's assistance from a psychiatrist, and Milos Forman's adaptation of Ken Kesey's
Films that were concerned with race relations included Hollywood's first major indictment of racism in producer Stanley Kramer's and director Mark Robson's Home of the Brave (1949), the story of a fl WWII soldier facing bigoted insults from his squad.

A gruelling and arduous war film with a stiff, hard-boiled perspective of justice and politics, Beresford creates a detailed exploration of guilt during war time, offering a number of standpoints and succinct considerations.
Morant is a challenging and thought provoking work, peppered by political impartiality but driven by hard-nosed, blood-on-their-hands realism that penetrates notions of hierarchy, responsibility, moral loyalty and the value of human lives.
The film provides a detailed, absorbing and timelessly relevant depiction of a congested war trial and zooms into the faces of those involved to measure its velocity.
