Topic: T kofschip

Dutch grammar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A shortened, informal form for het is 't.
Weak verbs form their past tenses by addition of a dental, -d- or -t-.
The rule Dutch children are taught is the " 't kofschip (the merchant ship) rule", that is, if the verb stem ends with the consonants of 't kofschip (-t, -k, -f, -s, -ch or -p), the past tense dental is a -t-; otherwise it is a -d-.

"pot" has plural "potten" ('pots'); the syllables divide "pot-ten", so the double "t" indicates the first syllable is closed and has a short vowel.
"poot" has plural "poten" ('paws'); the syllables divide "po-ten", so the "t" belongs to the second syllable, and as the first syllable is now open, the double "oo" is no longer required to mark vowel length.
Dutch children are taught the rule 't kofschip is met thee beladen, ("the merchant ship is loaded with tea"), that is, if the verb stem in the infinitive ends with the consonants of 't kofschip (-t, -k, -f, -s, -ch or -p), the past tense dental is a -t-; otherwise it is a -d-.

In German and Dutch final consonants are never voiced, so the pronunciation /d/ does not occur.

Whether a "t" or "d" is used depends on the last vowel of the STEM.
Normally, the "d" is used, but if the STEM ends with one of "k", "f", "s", "ch", "p" the "t" is used.
A mnemonic for the "t" or "d" rule is the word "fokschaap" {breeding sheep} in which all the "t" vowels are present (also the word "kofschip" is used).

Dutch past tense of regular verbs comes in three groups: Strong verbs, Weak verbs with T, Weak verbs with D. The strong verbs have an irregular stem in the past tense, but are conjugated regularly, the only issue is remembering the correct stem.
If the final consonant is one appearing in the mnemonic word `T KOFSCHIP then it belongs to the T-group, otherwise it belongs to the D-group, provided that is isn't a strong or irregular verb.
We learned that we can construct a participle for a weak verb by using the prefix "ge-", the present tense verb-stem and a final D or T. This is often the case, but not always.

Mocht er nog iemand geïnteresseerd (enkel een d, voltooid deelwoord en de r zit niet in het kofschip) zijn in Lettmann-gerief, bestel dan tijdig (best deze week nog) en laat me iets weten, dan kan ik het eventueel meebrengen en kunnen we de transportkosten een beetje delen.

The a- sound in `tak-takken,' etc. is `short' because they are single and followed, in the same syllable, by a consonant (t, s, k, n, etc.).
Words that have a k, f, s, ch, or p before the `-en' in the infinitive, such as `werken' above, form the Past Tense and Perfect Tenses by means of a t; all other weak verbs take a d.
The same happens in spoken form in English words: a t is heard in `worked' and `chopped' although these words are spelled with a d.

You make a perfect tense with the perfect participle and the finite verb hebben, zijn or worden.
Use the rule of 't kofschip to find out what is the last letter of the perfect participle.
Another way to find out about the last letter is to change the verb to a past tese and 'listen to it'.

So, the verb fietsen gets -de(n) for the past and ge- plus -d for the perfect tense, while rennen gets -te(n) for the past and ge- plus -t for the perfect tense.
The thing that happens to fietsen happens to all the regular verbs that end on -t, -k, -f, -s, -ch and -p when the -en is taken of the infinitive (to remember these, the Dutch use the word 't kofschip and what happens to rennen, happens to the rest of the verbs.
