The first Kuiper Belt Object to be discovered was the romantically named 15760 1992 QB1, orbiting at about 44 AU.
In the three years that followed its discovery, 29 more objects were turned up and another team with the HST have claimed another 29 objects, too small (~10km) for orbit determinations.

15760 1992 QB1 was the first Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt Object discovered, found by David C. Jewitt and Jane X. Luu at Mauna Kea on 30 Aug. 1992.
Its QB1 designation is the source for the "Cubewano" name used for objects that are distant enough not to be in an orbital resonance with Neptune.
5145 Pholus is a Centaur that was discovered by David Rabinowitz at Spacewatch in an image of 9 Jan. 1992, and announced in IAUC 5434 on Jan. 23rd with designation 1992 AD.

Shortly after that, the first Kuiper-belt object, (15760) 1992 QB1, was discovered, with a = 44 AU.
This seemed ample back in 1992, when there were about 3000 asteroids to work with.
The above system could store up to a = 42.9 AU without trouble, and in 1992, I thought this would be ample.

For the first observation of this program, we have selected 1992 QB1 (since given the IAU designation 15760), the very first TNO discovered, since it satisfies the above constraints.
In addition, the TNO selected for the HRC must have a well constrained orbit, be bright (for a TNO) and that its orbit parameters must include heliocentric distance around 40 AU, low inclination, and high galactic latitude.
The observing window is from December 14, 2002 to December 20, 2002.

 Chiron And Friends - Astrology
(Incidentally, later that year, astronomers discovered the first of the many bodies beyond Pluto....1992 QB1, which is now designated 15760.) And three years later, with Chiron only months away from the closest to the Sun it can get, astronomers began to discover planets circling other stars for the first time in history.
As I mentioned earlier, Chiron moved closer to the Sun than Saturn in January 1992 (on the 23rd, to be exact.) It moved out past Saturn again on January 11, 1999....
So as Chiron entered the 'inner circle', so to speak, he introduced us to the first of his many friends.
