		Ã‰amon de Valera stated that he would serve as an ordinary IRA volunteer, and left the leadership of the Anti-Treaty Republicans to military leaders such as Liam Lynch.
		Thousands of Anti -Treaty IRA members (including De Valera) were arrested by the Free State forces in the weeks after the end of the war, when they had dumped their arms and returned home.
		However, although de Valera was in the area at the time, he is not known to have been involved in the assassination.
