The university's ?cole Polytechnique was the scene of a tragedy, the ?cole Polytechnique Massacre, on December 6, 1989.
The university is composed of thirteen faculties, more than sixty departments and two affiliated schools (?cole Polytechnique and ?cole des Hautes ?tudes Commerciales), and offers more than 250 undergraduate programs and more than 250 graduate programs, including 71 doctoral programs.
Although a branch of Laval University was planned as Montreal's first French-language university, it was not until February 14, 1920, that the law founding the university was passed, and another 13 years passed before the mountain campus's inauguration on June 3, 1943.

On the unusually balmy Saturday of Nov. 3, 1990 école polytechnique was premiered along with A Call to Prayerby Alvin Curran and Alma Materby Claude-Paul Gauthier in a stunning outdoor performance in Montreal during New Music America/Montreal Musiques Actuelles 1990.
On December 6, 1989 fourteen women were shot to death by Marc Lepine at the École Polytechnique, University of Montreal.
The piece is written for the eight churchbells in the bell tower of the Université du Quebec a Montréal (UQAM), for the UQAM choir, directed by Miklos Takacs.
