 Tin
From 1684 to 1692 halfpennies and farthings were issued in tin, with the date and the legend "nummorum famulus" ("servant of the coinage") on the rim.
English copper coins were traditionally the halfpenny and the farthing (1/4 penny).
Incidentally, the penny was a silver coin down to 1797, when it became the familiar large copper coin, last issued in 1967.

UK Decimal Coins - 20 and 50 Pence
The Twenty Pence coin was introduced in June 1982 to fill a very evident need for something to fill the gap between 10p and 50p.
After the introduction of the pound coin in 1983 demand for the coin dropped significantly, and although well used, fewer were tied up in slot machines, so the banks had a large surplus in stock.
One argument at the time of its introduction was that the coin's circulation life of 50 years is far in excess of the circulation life of a 10 shilling banknote.

Why Do People Collect Pattern Coins?
JD: The number one trait for patterns that makes them more valuable is that they are struck in a metal that they would have been struck in, if they'd been made into coins.
A gold pattern struck in gold is certainly worth more than that pattern struck in copper - but, then, gold patterns are worth so much more because there were so few of them struck.
For example, a silver dollar pattern in silver would be worth more than one struck in copper.

 ECONOMICS OF ENGLISH COINAGE DENOMINATIONS
The coins, except for the half-penny, were of uniform style with a shield containing the cross of St. George on the obverse and two shields with the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew on the reverse.
Later in the year, however, this coin was replaced by a larger coin of 6s 8d weighing 136.7 grains called a noble, but a gradual reduction in the weight and fineness of gold (to 120 grains) and silver (to 18 grains) over the next few years again reduced the integrity of the coinage.
The concept of an overvalued English penny is further supported by the frequent need during the rise of English industry to produce a base coinage on par with the coinage of Flanders in order to prevent the drain of bullion from England to the continent.

Electrum coins are the most frequently used coins by the masses.
This was within acceptable definitions of "electrum." Thus, 1 gold coin, 1 silver coin, and 2 copper coins were not only the correct weight, but about the correct value when adding up the value of the metal.
That is, 10 copper coins shall be worth 1 silver coin, 10 silver coins shall be worth 1 electrum coin, 10 electrum coins shall be worth 1 gold coin, 10 gold coins shall be worth 1 platinum coin, and 10 platinum coins shall be worth 1 mithral coin.

A Concise Encyclopedia of the European Union --E--
So was lost the opportunity to resurrect a romantic old name, for the écu had been an ancient French coin.
In September 1992 these strains culminated in violent currency speculation, resulting in the departure of the pound and the lira from the ERM and the devaluation of the peseta.
In 1995, however, the European Council agreed to abandon the name in favour of the euro, in deference to German concern that the ECU would not be credible, given its track record of repeated devaluation occasioned by the weakness of several of its components, notably the lira, the peseta, the escudo and the drachma.
