		Étampes is a town of northern France, capital of an arrondissement in the Essonne département, on the Orléans railway, 50 km southwest of Paris.
		Étampes lies on the river Chalouette, a tributary of the Juine which waters the eastern outskirts of the town.
		A fine view of Étampes is obtained from the Tour Guinette, a ruined keep built by Louis VI in the 12th century on an eminence on the other side of the railway.

		The tracks that cross here needed to be "Tamped" in order to bring the track up level with the new highway.
		You can see in these photos on this page the crew spreading the ballast rock around the ties as the machine lifts the track up.

		. You may wish to spend the night and visit the museum. RER C trains link Dourdan to Paris’ Austerlitz station in one hour (and beyond). Eighteen kilometers southeast of Dourdan is Étampes*, which has a main-line train station.
		If desired, you could ride eastward towards Fontainbleau (see Route 4).
