 CONK! Encyclopedia: Code_Napoleon
In 1791, Louis Michel le Peletier, de Saint-Fargeau had presented a new criminal code to the national Constituent Assembly.
However, the legal proceedings certainly did not have de jure presumption of guilt; for instance, the juror's oath explicitely recommended that the jury did not betray the interests of the defendants, and took attention of the means of defense.
The original Napoleonic Code, or Code Napoléon (originally called the Code civil des français, or civil code of the French), was the French civil code, established at the behest of Napoléon.

The chief was granted by Louis XI, in recognition of the loyalty shown when the duché de Bourgogne became part of the French crown on the death of Charles le Téméraire.
This earned him the hostility of the French king, Louis XI, and of the Swiss, at whose hands he was defeated in battle and killed outside Nancy in 1477.

 ArtRevSyllabus
The radicality of Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau lay in its present-ness, in the fact that this was a contemporary of the painter and his audience, not a far-off historical figure.
Aside from the fact that The Death of Marat exists in painted form, whereas Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau exists only in a drawing, The Death of Marat is nevertheless a far more famous work of art than Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau.
