 Physiological Disorders in Greenhouse Tomatoes
According to Adams and Ho (1993): "The basic cause of BER is a lack of co-ordination between the transport of assimilates by the phloem and of calcium by the xylem during rapid cell enlargement in the distal placenta tissue, i.e.
This parallels a sharp decline in the calcium concentration in the fruit tissue (Ehret and Ho, 1986).
Symptoms next appear in the fruit placenta in the case of internal blossom-end rot or in the blossom-end pericarp in the case of external blossom-end rot (Adams and Ho, 1992).

Ber Borochov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Borochov's ideas were influential in the convincing Jewish youth from Europe to move to Palestine, but Borochov's theories remained most influential in Eastern Europe, where they formed the basis of the Left Poale Zion movement which was active in Poland during the interwar years.
Borochov, for years an advocate for a doctrinaire Marxist Zionism, himself seemed to repudiate his former vision of class struggle in Palestine in speeches towards the end of his life, but Borochov's Left Poale Zion followers continued to vigorously advocate class struggle both in Palestine and eastern Europe, supporting the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.
Indeed, Borochov's vision of class struggle in Palestine was widely viewed as untenable by the 1910s, with Jewish migrants to Palestine struggling to establish an economic foothold and with interclass cooperation seemingly necessary, and his theories dimmed in popularity there.

BER is caused by insufficient calcium in the fruit.
Once BER occurs, it can be prevented in nonaffected fruit with a foliar spray of calcium chloride (36 percent calcium) at the rate of 14 to 64 ounces per 100 gallons (or 4 tablespoons/gallon) of water.
Even though adequate calcium may be applied in the nutrient solution, it may not be reaching the fruit because of insufficient water.

A Cellular Hypothesis for the Induction of Blossom-End Rot in Tomato Fruit -- HO and WHITE 95 (4): 571 -- Annals of Botany
Fruit growth rate (open circles) is slow immediately after ovule fertilization during the phase of cell division (Phase 1), accelerates during the phase of cell expansion (Phase 2), and slows again as the fruit approaches its final size (Phase 3).
Thus, BER is promoted by environmental factors, such as high light and elevated temperatures, that accelerate fruit growth, in addition to environmental factors that reduce the uptake, transport and deposition of Ca in the fruit.
It is hypothesized that BER occurs in distal tissues of young, rapidly expanding fruit when their demand for Ca exceeds their Ca supply.
