  2004 DW (Kuiper Belt object)
2004 DW was found in images taken on Feb. 17, 2004 (nearly 74 years to the day after Pluto was discovered) by Mike Brown (CalTech), Chad Trujillo (Gemini Observatory), and David Rabinowitz (Yale) – the same team that discovered the largest known KBO, 2003 UB313.
The diameter of 2004 DW has been put at about 1,600 km (compared with Pluto's 2,300 km) but this is only an estimate because of uncertainty in the object's albedo.
2004 DW moves in an orbit similar to that of Pluto and is therefore classified as a plutino.

90482 Orcus (originally known by the provisional designation 2004 DW) is a Kuiper Belt object (KBO) that was discovered by Michael Brown of Caltech, Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory, and David Rabinowitz of Yale University.
The discovery images of this object were acquired on February 17, 2004.
Since it shares a similar size and orbit to that of Pluto, it too must be named after a deity of the underworld.

The eccentricity of the orbits is represented by the red segments (extending from perihelion to aphelion) with inclination represented on Y axis.

In April 2004, we obtained visible and near-infrared spectroscopy and photometry of the Transneptunian Object (TNO) 90482 Orcus (2004 DW) with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) 8-m telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile.
This object, discovered on February 17, 2004, is one of the largest known TNOs, and it belongs to the dynamical class of Plutinos.
The high signal-to-noise ratio visible spectrum recorded on April 11, 2004, is nearly flat, in good agreement with the BVRI photometry we obtained the same night and with photometric measurements from Rabinowitz et al.

Prior to the 1990s only nine were known (all of them in our own solar system); as of 3 November, 2004, 133 are known, with all of the new discoveries being extrasolar planets, sometimes known as "exoplanets".
Planets are thought to form from the collapsing nebula that a planet's star formed out of, aggregating from gas and dust that orbits the protostar in a dense protostellar disk before the star's core ignites and its solar wind blows the remaining material away.
Another possible planet is 90482 Orcus, an object with an orbit and mass similar to Pluto's.

The planetoid is called 2004 DW, and located in the Kuiper Belt, billions of kilometres from Earth.
The team estimates that 2004 DW is 1,400 km across, but it's difficult to tell, because the size estimate comes from its brightness.
That means it was discovered in an image taken in 2004, but perhaps not noticed until recently.

Fully ten supernovae were reported as brighter than mag 15 at discovery during 2004, and another 13 as brighter than mag 16; the bulk of supernovae were in the magnitude range 17-19 upon discovery.
Comets continued in 2004 to have a standard presence in the CBAT publications, with non-spacecraft discoveries and recoveries appearing under 52 titles, and follow-up information appearing under 60 additional titles.

Risk monitoring: New observations of 2004 VD17 were reported today from this morning and over the previous two days, and today both risk monitors slightly lowered their risk ratings for this object.
When JPL today posted its first 2004 VD17 update since new observations became available early yesterday, it elevated the assessment to Torino Scale 1 (a routine alert that an object "merits special monitoring") for a single impact solution in 2091.
And 2004 VT60 was reported from Wise Observatory in Israel from late on the 13th, when this object was still listed with impact solutions.
