.357 Magnum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The.357 Magnum was designed for hunting, but was quickly adopted by police, who sought a cartridge with increased effectiveness against criminals in automobiles, and for self-defense use.
Based upon their earlier.38 Special revolver cartridge, the.357 Magnum cartridge was introduced in 1934 and its use has since become widespread.
The very beautiful 38/44 "Heavy Duty" revolver made by Smith and Wesson was one of these, and it still was made until 1964 or so when it faded into extinction in face of competition from the.357 Magnum which finally bested it in sales.

.357 SIG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another disadvantage is that because the 357 SIG uses a.355 bullet at higher velocities than other 9 mm cartridges, very few bullets have been specially designed for it, and the.357 Magnum bullets that are designed for the same velocity range cannot be used due to their diameter.
The 357 SIG is a good police cartridge; however, it does not quite reach the performance of the venerable.357 Magnum with heavier loads (over 125 gr.) or even with typical commercial loadings in 125 gr.
The 357 SIG, like the.357 Magnum, is well suited for the use of bullets that can defeat body armor (none of which are available to civilians in the U.S.).

 CALIBERS -- 357SIG Advocacy
Typical 357 Sig bullets have a diameter of.355 as opposed to the 357 Magnum with its.357 bullets.
Although the SAAMI specs from a 357 Magnum test barrel is 1450 fps, a typical 4" 357 Magnum often generates about 1350 fps, which happens to be the same velocity as the 357 Sig caliber from a 4" barrel --- See Attachment 6.
The velocity increase from a 4" to a 4.5" 357 Sig barrel is dramatic.

The.357 Magnum debuted in 1935 smack dab in the middle of the Depression.
When loaded in.357 brass and crimped in the crimping groove, the overall cartridge length is longer than the cylinder of the original Smith and Wesson.357 Magnum resulting in the nose of the cartridge protruding from the end of the cylinder.

SSAA - The versatile .357 Magnum
The development of the.357 Magnum is considered by many in the shooting community to have been a monumental turning point for handgunners throughout the world.
That first ever.357 Magnum carried the serial number 45,768 and was presented to J Edgar Hoover, head of the US FBI, on May 10 of that same year.
The.357 Magnum continued to hold onto the title as the ‘most powerful’ for two decades, until the.44 Remington Magnum made its debut in 1955.

 The First Magnum
The first.357 Magnum ammo was powered by a large rifle primer, a plus, but the bullets were so soft as to cause serious barrel leading with the use of a cylinder full or two, a definite negative.
Early 3 1/2 inch.357 Magnums became popular with FBI agents after one of the first was presented to J. Edgar Hoover.
By this time, both the New Service and Single Action Army in.357 and all other calibers were gone from the Colt Catalog.

Ruger SP101 Target Gray Stainless .357 Magnum
Recoil control is important for any handgun that is meant for social work, and especially for a small.357 Magnum.
When magnum cartridges came into being, the old designs were just made larger to handle the extra intensity of firing the magnums.
Other gun makers have since added the magnum chambering to their pocket revolvers by beefing them up in high stress areas, but they have neither the strength nor the durability of the SP101.

 HandGunInfo.com: 357SIG: 357 Sig and 9mm Comparison
In fact, the 357 SIG has gone a lot farther than the 10mm ever did (the 10 is a fantastic round, please don't misunderstand me), and the 357 SIG continues to slowly make new inroads and continue expanding in the market, despite all the naysayers.
The short neck of the 357 Sig can be easily compensated for by using a firm taper crimp and possibly a light cannelure groove on high quality plated bullets, or a sealant/glue, or using slower powders like AA#9, or using a.3555 bullet diameter, which all but eliminate bullet setback and over pressure problems.
The 357 SIG can be loaded for the recoil sensitive, for deep penetration or shallow penetration, for typical pistol blast or very loud and intimidating blast.

As I had earlier found with the.357 Magnum Total Titanium Tracker, the combination of the soft, hand-conforming Ribber grips and the integral barrel porting makes the lightweight Titanium Tracker revolver extremely comfortable to fire and easy to control even with the heaviest recoil, full-power.41 Magnum loads.
The original.357 was a fine performer, and the newly arrived.41 Magnums and six-inch.357 Magnum are equally excellent.
The accuracy of the two Trackers was also exceptional, again like my earlier experience with the first-run four-inch Model 627 Total Titanium.357 Magnum.

.357 Magnum or bigger bore? - TheFiringLine Forums
.357 Magnum, though not "big bore" (I'm a little confused as to where the Colonel considers the line between major and minor caliber to be), can put a heavy projectile onto target at high speed, up to 180 grains.
But back to your question, unless you're hunting large game, the 357 is plenty, although one of the good things about hunting with a mildly loaded hard cast 44 or 45 is that they give quick kills on small game without much meat damage.
The.357 Magnum is a very accurate round for use at the range (along with it's cousin.38 Special).

 SIXGUNS BEYOND THE44 Magnum
The.357 Magnum with 158 grain bullets was not even close to 100% reliable, and more so on days when the wind was against the backs of pigs and rams, and in fact was way behind 180 grain bullets at a slow 1100 feet per second.
To counter the medium bore.357 Magnum at 1500 feet per second, the.44 Associates, with Elmer Keith as the most notable member, continued to assert that the 250 grain.44 at 1200 feet per second could not only do anything the 'little' 158 grain.357 Magnum at 1500 feet per second could do, it could do it better.
