.50 Action Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The.50 Action Express (AE, 12.7 mm) is a cartridge used in a small number of large handguns, notably the IMI Desert Eagle.
The cartridge was developed in 1988 by Evan Whilden of Action Arms, who chose the gas operated Desert Eagle as the development platform, and first sold in 1991.
It is one of the largest handgun cartridges in use and is close to, or perhaps beyond, the limits of usability.

.50 rounds are not inherently 'high power' they simply use large bullets.

 US Lever-Action Rifles
Several years later, Bob Forkin modified the design to fire the.50 Action Express cartridge; this version is actually lighter than the.475 Linebaugh model, since the walls of the barrel are simply bored out to the new caliber and are thinner than the.475 Linebaugh version.
The action has been described by firearms expert Flint Hansen as "smooth as melted butter on glass," but he also says that the trigger pull is just a little heavy, and that the drop at the comb is a bit to much (of course, this depends upon how the shooter is built).
While this is common on.22 lever action rifles, it is not on other calibers.

The Desert Eagle in.50 Action Express was announced long before it was available, and this first of the really large-caliber production semiautos was a long time coming for a couple of reasons.
I'm only guessing, however I surmise the.50 Action Express Desert Eagle may not have come under such scrutiny had it been a revolver instead of such a menacing-looking semiauto.
While certainly not as popular as the Colt Single Action was during the days of the "B" Westerns in the 1930s and 40s, the Desert Eagle has been seen on the silver screen many times.

In a gun handling magnum loads (.357,.41,.44,.50 Action Express and.440 Cor-Bon), the breech has to be sealed up pretty tightly during firing, and this is accomplished by means of a rotating bolt with four lugs that interlock with the barrel.
The motion of the slide extracts the spent case, cocks the external hammer and chambers the next round.
Rotating bolts go back at least as far as World War I with France's Modele 1917 St. Etienne semiauto rifle, but for the most part it's a feature that has seen more use in M1s, M14s and M16s than in pistols.
