The flow of the two streams is countercurrent through the extraction zone wherein they are brought into intimate contact to effect the desired extraction of impurities from the aqueous 1,4-butanediol-containing mixture.
Butanediol has been manufactured commercially by processes involving the Reppe reaction of acetylene and formaldehyde followed by hydrogenation of the reaction mixture.
Stoichiometrically, five moles of hydrogen are required for each mole of dialkyl alkoxy succinate converted to butanediol.

The liquid mass was then polymerised by removing ethanediol and butanediol under 0.01 to 0.1 bar at a temperature between 230 to 250° C. to give decontaminated PBT in 60 minutes.
The vapour was condensed and the ethanediol recovered.
The mixture was then filtered in a hot pressure filter to remove the loaded adsorbents and the liquid mass transferred back to a 250 ml flask.

The National Toxicology Program did a study of the toxicology of 1,4 Butanediol and found that since it was rapidly converted into GHB in the body the results would be the same as GHB-- no toxicity.
Does anyone know for sure that the active ingredient in Promusol is 1,4 Butanediol, or is this discussion simply based on the assumption that the author of Answer 1 is correct in the statement that the active ingredient in Promusol is 1,4 Butanediol?
Tests have found that it is really a chemical called 1,4 butanediol.

The analog status of GBL and 1,4 butanediol in each state needs to be clarified and adequate training given to law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies statewide.
Mere possession of the precursor/analog GBL or the analog 1,4 butanediol is not illegal in and of itself at this time.
Several of the products list the primary ingredient as 1,4 butanediol (BD) or its other chemical names, tetramethylene glycol or sucol-B. These products may also surface labeled as degreasing or cleaning products that are in reality being used for human consumption.

Other products such as GBL and 1,4 butanediol (BD) are appearing in the illegal market as GHB substitutes.
GHB can be made from ingredients such as GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), a solvent commonly used as a paint stripper, or butanediol (1,4-butanediol), a chemical used in the production of plastics and adhesives.
