CIN - POPE ST. CLEMENT I - First Century
We are surely entitled to identify Clement with the Clement mentioned in the Shepherd of Hermas 'whose duty it is to write to cities abroad.' He may also be, as the Roman missal supposes, the Clement mentioned by St Paul in his epistle to the Philippians.
Clement was later made the hero of utterly unhistoric romances composed in Syria, the Clementine Homilies, Recognitions and Epitome.
St Clement banished by Nerva and Trajan to the quarries of the Chersonese, not yet in fact imperial territory, miraculously produced a spring of water for the benefit of his fellow convicts and converted multitudes of pagans.

"Crossing the Threshold of History: Jesus in the Apostolic Fathers"
That the circles which 1 Clement represents are approaching the moment when an historical Jesus was to crystallize in their thought seems evident, even though they have not quite reached that point.
In the 1 John passage, the readers’ knowledge, which they acquired “at the start” from the Father, is to be “kept in their hearts,” just as Clement reminds the Corinthians that Christ’s word has been “stored in their hearts.” In any case, the point may be moot.
The main purpose of Clement’s letter is to impress upon the rebel Corinthians that they must accept the authority of their appointed elders, and he marshals all manner of evidence, mostly drawn from scripture, to support the principle of this authority.

Very early brands were hand-drawn in the clay, and Clement notes that the literacy of laborers is sometimes evident in misspellings or reversed 'N's and 'S's.
Later brands were mass-produced using wood or metal dies inserted in the brick molds; occasionally the screws holding the die to the backing panel of the mold also will be reproduced in the finished brick.

For all intents and purposes, we may as well call that person "Clement." Whether or not his views really did represent the opinions of the entire group at Rome is a matter of debate.
There are six manuscripts (two in Greek, one in Latin, one in Syriac, and two in Coptic) which provide the text for 1 Clement.
With such an attitude being expressed, it is quite natural that later "bishops" would regard the letter of "Clement" very highly, and in fact, the letter was included together with some copies of the New Testament, even though it was known not to have been written by anyone who knew Jesus and the envoys.
