Light year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
More specifically, a light year is defined as the distance that a photon would travel, in free space and infinitely far away from any gravitational or magnetic fields, in one Julian year (365.25 days of 86400 seconds each).
Since the speed of light in a vacuum is exactly 299,792,458 m/s, one light year is exactly equal to 9,460,730,472,580,800 m.
Since light travels 299,792,458 m in one second, a light second is 299,792,458 m in length.

With the clinical and histopathological correlations, I feel that this original observation in uraemic patients should be designated as the “Tongue Sign of Uraemia”.

Indeed, the February 1, 1991, issue of Byte Magazine reports the two events in the same issue.74 Microsoft's applications competitors suffered delays of many months as they were forced to rewrite their own applications to make them perform under Windows as well as Microsoft's Excel, which had a head start in using OLE.
It was not until many months later that the first third-party implementation of OLE appeared on the market.75 Microsoft's unfair advantage obtained from prior knowledge of operating system functionality created a significant head start for its own applications on the new Windows platform.
And, according to this economic argument, there would be no point in Microsoft expending the resources to monopolize applications (level 5), since it would derive the same benefit by monopolizing the operating system (level 2).

Nemesis is the name given to a hypothetical red dwarf star, magnitude between 7 and 12, orbiting the Sun at a distance of about 1 E15 m to 1 E16 m astronomical unit, somewhat beyond the Oort cloud.
Nemesis existence was proposed by Richard A. Muller in 1984 (Nature, vol 308, pp 715-717, 1984) to explain an apparent 26-million year cycle in the occurrence of mass extinction on Earth as noted by Raup and Sepkoski.
No direct evidence for Nemesis has been found, however, and the existence of a periodicity in the Earths series of mass extinctions is disputed.

Since the speed of light in vacuum is 299,792,458 m/s, one light year is approximately equal to 9.46 × 1015 m = 9.46 petameter.
The light-year is used to measure large distances, like the distance from the solar system to a nearby star.
Miscellaneous facts: * It takes 8 minutes for light to travel from the Sun to the Earth (thus we are about 8 light minutes in distance away from the Sun).
