The Kibitzer by Tim Harding Interesting Byways in the Classic Open Games The question of whether Black should meet 1 e4 by 1...e5 is one of the toughest for players to decide and for theory to settle.
All this time I opened 1 e4 and met 1...e5 by 2 Bc4 which usually gained some time on the clock as almost nobody except Bent Larsen took that move seriously in the early 1970s.

 The Bug Board: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Be7
Regardless of which line you pick, I think the general plan is to drop pawns and bishops on the light-colored squares, which should put Black in a very uncomfortable bind.
At this point, of course, N is excellent of course (N@g4+), but even so, it will cost white at least a few tempi to patch up his position, at the least you can expect some development time in exchange for the B sac.
If fl wants 2 hold e5 and not get mated, the only ideas i can think of, (Except something Like n@g6) would be qf6/qe7.

 The Bishop's Opening - Introduction
The Bishop's Opening (1.e4 e5 2.Bc4) is among the first recorded opening lines and was played by Greco, though he and his contemporaries much preferred the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4).
These players, however, generally prefer the slow maneuvering lines with 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d3 which often resemble the closed lines of the Ruy Lopez.
In this article and related sites, I recommend instread the swashbuckling Urusov Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4) against 2....Nf6 and gambit alternatives for White against other Black moves.
