1 JOHN, NRSV NEW TESTAMENT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In the Gospel, denying the divinity of the Son is equivalent to denying the Father (e.g., Jn 5.20-23).
Since the author of 1 John writes to ensure that its readers will not be deceived by the doctrine of opposing teachers (2.26-27), it would hardly have been the case that the secessionists denied the Christian belief that Jesus is the messiah or the Johannine insight that Jesus is identical with the Father.
Though the clues in 1 John suggest that the opponents held some views in common with Cerinthus, the evidence is not decisive.

Made his dwelling: literally, "pitched his tent/tabernacle." Cf the tabernacle or tent of meeting that was the place of God's presence among his people (Exodus 25:8-9).
Glory: God's visible manifestation of majesty in power, which once filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34) and the temple (1 Kings 8:10-11, 27), is now centered in Jesus.

But, that we may be assured which apostle this was, there is scarcely a critic or competent judge of diction, or style of argument and spirit, but will adjudge this epistle to the writer of that gospel that bears the name of the apostle John.
As sure then as it is that that disciple was John, so sure may the church be that that gospel and this epistle came from the beloved John.

Gospel of John - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Genesis 1 focuses on God's creation, John 1 focuses on the Word (or Logos in the Greek) and the significance of the Word coming into the already created world.
Unlike the Synoptic Gospels, elements of Gnosticism have been recognized by some readers in the Gospel of John though it is not generally regarded as a "Gnostic gospel".
In order to find passages that refute Gnosticism—by stating that Christ is approachable even as Spirit—readers must turn instead to the First Epistle of John, in passages such as 1 Jn 2:1-2; 3:8, 3:16 and 4:2-3.

The purpose of the apostle (1:1-4) is to declare the Word of Life to those to whom he writes, in order that they might be united in fellowship with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.
He shows that the means of union with God are, (1) on the part of Christ, his atoning work (1:7; 2:2; 3:5; 4:10, 14; 5:11, 12) and his advocacy (2:1); and (2), on the part of man, holiness (1:6), obedience (2:3), purity (3:3), faith (3:23; 4:3; 5:5), and love (2:7, 8; 3:14; 4:7; 5:1).

On the sin issue, Calvinists and sinning religionists interpret the whole First Epistle of John based on 1 Jn However clearly John may speak on the sin issue in other places, these interpreters fall back on 1:8 in their insistence for sin in believers.
Commenting on 1 Jn 3:4-10, the Geneva Study Bible states, “He says clearly that in this life no one can be without sin (1:8).” This is the general conclusion of the Gnostic, antichrist spirit noted under The Church Overrun By the Gnostic Mutant: 1 John 1:8.
Conclusion: 1 Jn 1:8 does not save the false doctrine of the sinning religionist; although, they have engaged in one of the most studied efforts in theology, they cannot save their lie.
