	Encyclopedia: 1 Maccabees
		The contents of 1 Maccabees and 2 Macc 4-15 are in the main parallel, dealing with the same incidents; but the simple narrative character of 1 Maccabees, in contrast to the didactic and highly religious as well as supernatural coloring of 2 Maccabees, can easily be seen in these corresponding parts.
		That the author of 1 Maccabees aims at giving a correct narrative, and that on the whole his account is correct, is the opinion of practically all scholars.
		In 1 Macc 13:30 we read that the monument erected in 143 BC by Simon in memory of his father and brothers was standing at the time when this book was written, words implying the lapse of say 30 years at least.

		1 Maccabees is a deuterocanonical book of the Bible which was probably written about 100 BC, after the restoration of an independent Jewish kingdom.
		The book tells the story of the conquest of Palestine by the Greeks under Alexander the Great, the attempt by the Greeks to impose Greek culture on the Jews, and the Jewish revolt against that domination.
		The book covers the whole of the revolt, from 175 to 134 BC and highlights that the salvation of the Jewish people in this crisis came from God through Matthatias' family, particularly his sons Judas, Jonathan and Simon, and his grandson John Hyrcanus.

		First Maccabees was originally written in Hebrew and is usually dated 100 B.C. It begins with the the reign of Antiochus IV in 175 B.C, the rebellion of Mattathias in 167 B.C. and ends with the murder of Simon in 135 B.C. and the reign of his son, John Hyrcanus I in 134 B.C..
		Judas Maccabee is the central figure and the restoration of the Temple under Judas’ leadership is described as the high point of his career, the Hanukkah.
