Kelvin was born in Belfast, Ireland, on June 26, 1824, and educated at the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge.
Kelvin also investigated the oscillatory nature of electrical discharge, the electrodynamic properties of metals, and the mathematical treatment of magnetism, and he contributed to the theory of elasticity.
Kelvin was knighted in 1866 and was raised to the peerage with the title of Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892.

The word kelvin as an SI unit is correctly written with a lowercase k (unless at the beginning of a sentence), and is never preceded by the words
General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), Resolution 3, CR 79), it was the "degree Kelvin", and written °K; the "degree" was dropped in 1967 (13th CGPM, Resolution 3, CR 104).
The Celsius temperature scale is now defined in terms of the kelvin, with 0 °C corresponding to 273.15 kelvins.

One kelvin is formally defined as 1/273.16 of the temperature of the triple point of water (the point at which water, ice and water vapor exist in equilibrium).
For everyday applications, it is often convenient to use the Celsius (previously centigrade) scale, in which 0 °C corresponds to the temperature at which water freezes and 100 °C corresponds to the boiling point of water at sea level.
In this scale a temperature difference of 1 degree is the same as a 1 K temperature difference, so the scale is essentially the same as the kelvin scale, but offset by the temperature at which water freezes (273.15 K).

§ 16. Centigrade / Celsius / Kelvin. 4. Science Terms. The American Heritage Book of English Usage. 1996
Rather than using the freezing and boiling points of water at 1 atmosphere of pressure, the degree interval Celsius was set equal to the degree interval Kelvin, and 0 °C was set equal to 273.15 degree Kelvin.
Thus, the Kelvin scale became the fundamental temperature scale.
The fundamental temperature interval would be called simply kelvin (with a lowercase k), and the symbol would be K without any degree symbol (°).

kelvin (K) kelvin (K): A unit of thermodynamic temperature, taken as one of the base units of the International System of Units (SI).
The kelvin is defined by setting the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water at 273.16 K. Note 1: The kelvin was formerly called "degree Kelvin." The term "degree Kelvin" is now obsolete.
Note 2: In measuring temperature intervals, the degree Celsius is equal to the kelvin.
