Before the 1996 Olympics a bout of illness just before the competition wrecked her chances in the 1,500 and 5,000m - a massive pity considering she was at the peak of her career and probably her best chance to take an Olympic gold.
At Sydney 2000 she finally claimed an Olympic medal in the 5,000m, though it was a silver and not an elusive gold.
Much worse was to follow, though, when the mother of two finished a distant last in the final of the 5,000m at the 2003 World Championships in Paris.
