In the early episodes of 100 Centre Street--which will be rerun starting April 9--we encounter Esposito, played by a magnetic young actor named Joseph Lyle Taylor, near the beginning of the familiar Lumet trajectory: something of an innocent, still unsure who the enemy is.
Set in Manhattan night court, 100 Centre Street has begun by adopting a more skeptical stance, even hinting at the argument of critical legal studies--that America's racial, class, and gender inequities are so embedded in the law that only a radical overhaul of the system can make it fair.
It would be great if these discordant notes formed a tune--if 100 Centre Street dissected in fine, entertaining detail how America's courts and legal apparatus fall short, or if the show allowed the mistakes made by Rifkind and Esposito to achieve tragic intensity.

Or, there is a scene in 100 Centre where Alan Arkin had a seven-page speech in which he tried to avoid talking about the one thing that was bothering him--and then finally came around to it.
What we are trying to do on Centre Street is what I've tried on all my other shows--to make the energy and interest come from revelation of character, and to make that as exciting as a car chase.

When watching 100 Centre Street, a new hour long episodic series that airs on the Arts and Entertainment network Monday nights at 9PM, you might think you are seeing a courtroom drama shot on 35mm film as we've come to expect from 90% of prime time TV fare.
Other shows such as Titus and Earth: Final Conflict have used the CineAlta for their productions, but 100 Centre Street is the first to use multiple 24P cameras both in the studio and on location to heighten the punch of a rawly emotional dramatic story line.
The central character of 100 Centre Street is Judge Joe Rifkind, played by Alan Arkin, a deeply compassionate man whose depth of feeling for the accused often seems at odds with his background in law enforcement.

Bleeding-Heart TV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
100 Centre Street, the new series on AandE created by movie director Sidney Lumet (Monday, 9 p.m.), is not earth-shattering television, but it is based on a great premise: night court in Manhattan.
At least 100 Centre Street is not like Law and Order, an addictively watchable show that is also an instrument of victims' rights propaganda--some smart political consultant could easily cannibalize it for videos for a New York mayoral campaign.
The key to understanding Lumet's outmoded contextualism on the subject of crime is to know that he is 72 and a member of a generation of Jewish, left-wing New Yorkers that is quickly fading from the scene.

Still, LaTanya likes Alan, even his "bleeding Jewish heart." And 100 Centre Street would be worth the watching if only to see the playing out of this genuine friendship between adult professionals of opposite sexes, different colors, and contrary politics.
