To me, rock was always anything with an electric guitar at all; the level of distortion seemed to be the only difference.
Recently it seems that rock is pretty much stuff like Creed, but Metallica seems like rock to me too because it has a discernable melody.
Hard rock is for all those artists that never play in a major key, always a minor.

MTV announced that Nine Inch Nails was one of the artists chosen for the countdown, which the music video network polled an array of rockers including Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Grohl, Korn drummer David Silveria, Flea, Sebastian Bach, and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler to determine the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock."

Well, these kinds of lists are always difficult because people label music their own way.
The room for argument on this, like any other "Top blah blah list" is unfathomable, BUT, I will say that Bad Brains and Husker Du should be much higher on the list, especially if you ever saw either one of them live.
Didn't see Santana or Chicago on the list---which is a joke..perhaps because those bands changed styles slightly over the years..But if anyone needs proof as to if/how they rocked, get any album of either group from 1970-75 --just amazing stuff..
