Most likely, the tough ass would utterly destroy the nerd, and 1000 Hurts would be the most pure rock and roll Shellac album ever, probably sacrificing the intellectual side of their music for animalistic brutality.
This would be seen by the world at large as a rebellion against the prevalently wussy state of music today, even though it would be actually due, as mentioned, by the latent tension within the mind of Albini and the band as a group.
1000 Hurts is a departure from previous Shellac releases, but not in the way I expected.

Hurt No More was released on April 20, 2004 in the US and as at early June 2004, had reached #1 on the Billboard r&b/hip hop chart, #2 on the US Billboard 200 and #3 on the UK album charts.
Allmusic.com rated the album as 4 stars out of 5 saying it was "one of the best R and B albums of the year" In contrast, ''Rolling Stone'' rated it as two stars saying the "lyrics lack punch" and the songs "never achieve the angst" they should.

1000 Hurts is their 3rd album and, as usual, the packaging is superb.
Both the record and the CD come in a reel to reel tape box (the CD version is of course a very small reel to reel).
The songs and recording on 1000 Hurts don't deviate from the sound of their other releases so much as to shock the listener, but there are some definite differences.

Shellac fans know that this is the first recorded output from the band since their contribution to the legendary At Home With the Mackie Mixer compilation The compilation, released in late 1998 on the German label Klutzpahrt, showcased artists who used the Mackie brand of mixer in the production of their music.

And what a package it is! 1000 Hurts clearly ranks among the all-time greatest in record promotion, right up there with the Stones' Sticky Fingers.

The first track on 1000 Hurts, "Prayer to God," is a funny and great idea, a plea to God to kill an unfaithful wife and the other man, with details on how the deed should be done.
Even the quiet diversion, 1000 Hurts version of "Didn't We Deserve..." in "Mama Gina," only lasts a few minutes and ends loudly and noisily.

All the violence and the energy trapped on their recorded output is released as all three band members jab and thunder, making exceptional noises, pausing only to rant about Canada and watches and to share illuminating 'Question and Answer' sessions with the audience.
Like everything else they've released, 1000 Hurts is brutal, uncompromising and gritty as hell.
Kind of made up on the spot, which is not necessarily a bad thing, except that every now and again you wonder if things are going to slip into 'new metal.' Unless you're a Shellac maniac, 1000 Hurts isn't the kind of record you can play again and again.

Shellac, 1000 Hurts (Touch & Go): True, Steve Albini has left me feeling ambivalent re his talents as a producer on a few occasions, though in retrospect, Nirvana's In Utero sounds agreeably unpolished.
Still, there can be no doubt that as a musician, the singer/guitarist is, and always has been, a punk of the first magnitude (see the Big Black back catalogue for proof).
That's just for starters: 1000 Hurts delivers death, violence and adultery galore, tearing away the veil of bourgeois normality to reveal the actual horrors of the human animal.

Though they do not reach the same heights as they did on their early 7"s, overall, 1000 Hurts is more consistent in quality than Terraform, and at least as good as At Action Park.
In fact, "Prayer to God" may be as good as any song they have recorded, in part because it is an earnest plea on behalf of a betrayed lover for "the one true God" to kill his lover and the one with whom she betrayed him.
Some have criticized 1000 Hurts of being too gimmicky, that it is like a couple of professional engineers performing sonic experiments in space and rhythm and calling it a record.

 NME.COM - Reviews - 1000 Hurts
The official line on the 11th record by Shellac is predictably terse and to the point: "This record is more mean-spirited." For it to have spirit of any description comes as a relief, following the sucking letdown that was 1998's pristine, emotionally stillborn 'Terraform'.
But from its title inwards, '1000 Hurts' marks the rekindling of Steve Albini's soul.
In his best work - and '1000 Hurts' is just that - this unflinching desire to probe and expunge evil has ignited in revolutionary assaults on the conventions of that which is called rock.

The band hasn't released anything since 2000's 1000 Hurts (Touch And Go).
The trio, which started in 1992, has released three albums and curated the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in 2002.
The title 1000 Hurts refers to drummer Todd Trainer's pet Italian Greyhound, which, we're guessing, is most excellent.

Leave it to the king of low-fi indie hipsters, Steve Albini and his band to release a new album amid absolutely no press hype whatsoever; in fact, this record will be a surprise release even to Shellac fans.
Using rhythm as a base, Albini’s guitar noodles slightly here and there, but the crux of the music is bass and drums, a dual rhythmic attack that, along with guitar, holds the strength.
The title, 1000 Hurts, no doubt, stems from the lyrical content of most of the album’s songs.

Shellac is back for another aural attack with 1000 Hurts, a more accessible album than previous fare such as At Action Park.
Cage-rattling aces Todd Trainer and Bob Weston are given gonzo airlift by the big-room sound Albini loves to champion--it's helium light and lead heavy at the same time.
The shorter tracks, such as "Canaveral" and "QRJ," allow for easy-in, easy-out rock fiestas, while longer cuts such as "Watch Song" give the rhythm section a workout.

But after the studious avant-rock of Shellac's last album, Terraform, the outpour of billious hate that Albini unleashes on 1000 Hurts is enough to knock a casual listener sideways.
In '1000 Hurts' Shellac have coupled their trademark steam engine of thwacking bass and drums to a renewed, almost visionary expression of humanity in Steve Albini's delivery.
It strips the human spirit as raw as it does the fundaments of rock n' roll.

Better known these days as an engineer, Steve Albini miraculously reappears with his legendary Chicago trio Shellac.
Without a scabrous new LP under their belts — 2000’s jarring math opus 1000 Hurts (Touch & Go) being their most recent — Albini, Todd Trainer, and Bob Weston can still call whatever shots they want.
Shellac has never set foot in Texas, so take the hint.

That hardly stemmed the jagged shards of angularity, Albini and bassist Bob Weston chugging through the new(ish) "Steady as She Goes," the repetition of unreleased "The End of Radio" (with Albini's continued refrain "Can you hear me now?"), and the jarring tantrum of "My Black Ass" from '94's At Action Park.
"Squirrel Song," off 2000's 1000 Hurts, slipped through the first Q&A with drummer Todd Trainer's drool.
A rousing "Prayer to God" broke into a full-fledged noise/punk sing-along, Trainer's sticks at 45 degrees, his overbite emphasizing the song's frenetic exuberance.

 Rolling Stone : 1000 Hurts : Review
Shellac is Albini's anti-rock project: slow, dark and stripped down, with big drums, clear, zinging guitar and Albini's plain voice disaffectedly reporting his lyrics.
Much of 1000 Hurts sounds like a live performance in which Albini, drummer Todd Trainer and bassist Bob Weston try to exasperate their listeners -- kicking off with a kill-the-bitch screed that would make Eminem wince, stretching out the edgy tension of "Mama Gina" with an abstruse spoken-word midsection and ear-splitting thrash.
Rock assaults like "Ghosts" are too ironic to be headbangers; everything else is just grueling and self-satisfied.

1998's Terraform and 2000's 1000 Hurts would follow, featuring the bitter, incendiary "Watch Song." You can get all of these albums on CD if you want to, but Shellac really sounds best in the analog glory of the vinyl record.
