About the Project - 1001 Nights Cast
The 1001 nights, Alf layla wa-layla, Les mille et une nuits: a title in constant motion, endlessly generating more and more versions of itself through translation, extension and expurgation.
On her wedding night Scheherazade plots with her sister, Dunyazade, to entertain the king with a story that she does not finish when morning comes.
1001 nights cast is a project generated by the forces of The 1001 nights: the theatrics of the voiced story, the need for framing devices, the strategies for survival, the allure of the Middle East and its contrasting realities.

The Book of One Thousand and One Nights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edgar Allan Poe wrote a "Thousand and Second Night" as a separate tale, called "The Thousand And Second Tale Of Scheherazade." It depicts the 8th and final voyage of Sinbad the Sailor, along with the various mysteries Sinbad and his crew encounter; the anomalies are then described as footnotes to the story.

 The Medieval 'Nights'
In the 12th century a loan record for a Jewish bookseller in Cairo mentions the title "The 1001 Nights" -- the earliest mention of its present title -- and the Egyptian historian al-Maqrîzî in the early 15th century cites authors who indicate the work was in circulation in Cairo in the late 11th century.
That the number 1001 for much of its history simply meant 'a lot' is a safe conjecture in view of the rather free use of numbers in medieval Arabic literature.
The 1001 Nights is a multiple text, and I see no reason to exclude any standard Arabic editions or any of the translations based on it no matter how controversial they may be.

The Thousand and One Nights (alf layla wa layla) or The Arabian Nights, as they came to be known, owes its origins to three distinct cultures and storytelling traditions: that of India, Persia and the Arab world.

The introduction was extremely helpful in explaining the history of the Arabian Nights, why there are different versions, and why those different versions may contain different tales.
Beautifully bound, printed on high-quality paper, with an erudite introduction, and clear, but stylish font, I thought how appropriate for the publisher to release a classic such as The Arabian nights in such a 'classic' style, hearkening back to a time when great care was put into published books.
Husain Haddawy has chosen to use an airy conversational language, which is (I suspect) much closer to how the Nights would have sounded to the contemporary listener.
