At the age of 20, Dominique François Jean Arago (AH-ruh-go) (1786—1853) went on a scientific expedition to Spain to determine the length of a meridian of arc, and hence the meter.
He made contributions to physics and astronomy, served as Director of the Paris Observatory, minister of war and navy to the French republic, and as president of the Executive Power Commission after the revolution of 1848.

On 2006 May 29 UT, the 58 km diameter asteroid (1005) Arago will occult a 11.3 mag star in the constellation Norma for observers along a wide uncertainty path across north-western Western Australia.
In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 3.7 mag to 15.0 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 4.1 seconds.
