Roman Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Roman Republic (Latin: Res Publica Romanorum) was the representative government of Rome and its territories from 510 BC until the establishment of the Roman Empire, sometimes placed at 44 BC (the year of Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator) or, more commonly, 27 BC (the year that the Roman Senate granted Octavianus the title "Augustus").
One's class was fixed by birth rather than by wealth, and though patricians had in the early Republic monopolized all political offices and probably most of the wealth, there are always signs of wealthy plebeians in the historical record, and many patrician families had lost both wealth and any political influence by the later Republic.
By the 2nd century BC the classifications had meaning predominantly in religious functions — many priesthoods remained restricted to patricians.

Fulvia's civil war (41/40 BC), between the forces of Lucius Antonius and Fulvia Antonia (the younger brother and wife of Marc Antony) and Octavian's Triumvirate army - Triumvirate victory
In 27 BC Octavian was granted the title of Augustus by the Senate, considered the end of the Republic and the birth of the Empire.
The next Roman civil war would not be fought until after Nero's suicide in 68 AD; this period was known as the "Pax Augusti" (peace of Augustus), and was the beginning of the era known as the "Pax Romana" (Roman Peace).

In 107 BC, Sulla was nominated quaestor to Gaius Marius, who was taking control of the Roman army in the war against King Jugurtha of Numidia.
On the verge of the Social War (91–88 BC), the Roman aristocracy and Senate were starting to fear Marius' ambition, which had already given him five consulships in a row from 104 BC to 100 BC.
By 81 BC Sulla was appointed dictator (with no limit on time in office) by the senate and had total control of the city of Rome.

Bluffton University Athletics - bc tops defiance
BC’s Mike Leimeister, who tied the game with a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining, took a charge on Defiance’s last possession, giving the ball back the Beavers under Defiance’s basket.
BC first pulled off that feat on Jan. 19, 2000 with a 94-92 win over Franklin, then did it twice last season on back-to-back games as the Beavers defeated Manchester 94-87 on Jan. 10 and then upended Hanover 82-77 on Jan. 13.
Bluffton was even hotter from 3-point land, hitting 82% of their trey attempts (9-for-11), with all nine 3-pointers coming in a span of eight minutes (15:07 to 7:05).
