What is a 1099 Form?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
1099 forms are used for a number of reasons, though, typically, they are given to independent contractors--also known as "freelancers"--as a record of the income they received from a particular business.
On a 1099 MISC Form, the income earned will be noted, but there will not be any deductions for federal and state income taxes, nor will any deferred compensation, social security, or medical deductions be taken.
Though the 1099 MISC Form is the most popular, 1099 forms are also issued to denote the interest (1099 INT) the government may have paid in a particular tax year, and 1099 G Form denotes any tax refund you may have received from the government.

While the IRS has certain requirements for brokers to report to them, and to the related taxpayer who sold the securities, your receipt of a 1099 is not required for you to file your return.

Unlike a W-2 it is not necessary to attach a copy of a 1099 to your return, unless, it reports withholding.

While a new agreement with the IRS is in place that should ensure continued operation over the remainder of this federal fiscal year, we must take a serious look at the cost of the data compared to their benefits.
In light of the benefits to be obtained from NDNH proactive matching and Financial Institution data matching, states should re-evaluate their continuing need to obtain 1099 information and, if appropriate, revise the criteria they use to select cases for 1099 requests.
Additionally, 1099 information is generally stale upon arrival, given the normal delays in the 1099 reporting process.

The Corrected IRS Form 1099 is for use primarily in undoing the damage done by private employers and companies, who usually because of their ignorance of the law, either complete Information Returns such as the Form 1099 when they don't need to, or who put false information on these returns.
