Most network managers agree that the actual throughput difference on a busy network is usually 1.5 to 2 times faster than 10Base T, not the 10 times you would expect from the specifications.
It is used most often as a junction to other Ethernet networks and a higher performance version of 100Base-T and 10Base-T that can co-exist in the same network if the proper concentrators, bridges and switches are present.
(3COM just happens to make them!) Most network managers (that are lucky enough to have these) agree that the actual throughput difference on a busy network is usually 10 to 20 times faster than 10Base T, not the 100 times you would expect from the specifications.

The –2, -5 and –36 refer to coaxial cable, -T refers to twisted-pair cable and –F refers to fiber-optic cable.
The term BASE means that the wires are used to carry Ethernet and nothing else.

As in the case of the 10BASE-T, the segment lengths are not identified in this notation.
A 10BASE2 network, for example, operates at 10 Mbps, uses baseband signaling, and is restricted to a segment length of 200m.
The notation 10BASE-F is a further example of the 10BASE series.

 Glossary - #
The "10Base" prefix stands for "10 Mbps baseband" (see baseband); similar IEEE specifications for faster LANs use "100Base" and "1000Base" prefixes (see 100Base-x series and 1000Base-x series).
The letter or numeral at the end of each specification name denotes the type of cable - "F" for fiber, "T" for twisted-pair, and numerals for various types of coaxial cable.
A physical-media specification from the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, supporting Fast Ethernet local-area networks operating at 100 megabits per second over fiber-optic cable.

Computer, Telephony and Electronics Glossary and Dictionary
The F indicates it is a fiberoptic cable and includes subcategories of 10Base-FB, 10Base-FL and 10Base-FP.
Most network managers agree that the actual throughput difference on a busy network is usually 1.5 to 2 times faster than 10Base T, not the 10 times you would expect from the specifications.
The maximum segment is published to be 5000 meters but under most circumstances with a contiguous cable and good connections, it can easily support huge distances, miles between connections, and repeaters and amplifier hubs can be used to join segments and increase the overall distance covered by the network.

 10BASE-5 - a Whatis.com definition
The "BASE" refers to baseband signalling, which means that only Ethernet signals are carried on the medium (or, with 10BASE-36, on a single channel).
The "T" represents twisted-pair; the "F" represents fiber optic cable; and the "2", "5", and "36" refer to the coaxial cable segment length (the 185 meter length has been rounded up to "2" for 200).

The 10Base-T UTP Ethernet and 10Base-2 Coax Ethernet were very popular around the early to mid 1990's when 100Mbit network cards and hubs/switches were very expensive.
Today's prices have dropped so much that most vendors don't focus on the 10Base networks but the 100Base ones and, at the same time, support the 10 BaseT and 10Base-2 standard.
We will also talk about the 10Base5/F and 35 shortly.

TechFest - Ethernet Technical Summary - Chapter 1
In 1993, the IEEE 802.3j standard for 10Base-F (FP, FB, and FL) was released which permitted attachment over longer distances (2000 meters) via two fiber optic cables.
These advantages led to a vast expansion in the use of Ethernet.
This standard updated and expanded the earlier FOIRL standard.

For thin coax the "2" is 185 meter maximum length for individual thin coaxial segments.
The "T' and "F" stand for "twisted-pair" and "fiber optic," and simply indicate the cable type.
Thick Coaxial Media System Thick coaxial segments are installed as a backbone segment for interconnecting Ethernet hubs; Thick coaxial media provides good electrical shielding that can carry signals relatively long distances between hubs.
