Topic: 10GBaseT

Category 5 cable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is likely that the yet to be finalized 10GBaseT (10 Gigabit Ethernet) will be able to run over Cat 5e/Cat 6, albeit with limited range.
It is designed for transmission frequencies up to 600 MHz, which should enable it to carry 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBaseT), but may require a redesigned (but backward compatible) RJ-45 connector called a GG45 to achieve this speed.
Current proposals for 10GBaseT seek to allow it to run full speed, but shorter distances over Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable.

Cat 7 (Cat 7: more facts about this subject) cable, with four individually-shielded pairs (ScTP) inside an overall shield, has been proposed but is not in common use.
It is designed for transmission frequencies up to 600MHz (MHz: One million periods per second), which should enable it to carry 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBaseT), but requires a redesigned RJ-45 connector (called a GG45) to achieve this speed.
10GBaseT networks are not yet widely available, and may not be able to compete with fibre optic (fibre optic: an optical fiber is a transparent thin fiber, usually made of glass, for transmitting light]...

Ethernet keeps pumping the data - 10/14/2004 - EDN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Following extensive simulation, the IEEE study group concludes that it should be possible to run 10GBaseT for distances of 55 to 100m on Category 6 cable, with a Category 7 installation ensuring 100m reach.
But this capability is mandatory for 10GBaseT and requires some 20 dB of cancellation, because the resulting SNR impairment would otherwise prevent operation over Category 5e/6 cabling.
Their calculations indicate that 10GBaseT requires about 400 MHz of analogue bandwidth rather than 1000BaseT's 80 MHz, and that a 100m cable attenuates signals at this higher frequency by as much as 50 dB.

LRM, like 10GBaseT is stuck in the quagmire of politics and technological debate.
Realizing 300m was not achievable the standards committee tried to change it to 220m but reversed themselves when the user community said 300m or nothing.

Setback for copper Ethernet - Personal Computer World   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The IEEE's upcoming 10GbaseT spec is unlikely to support 10Gbit/s Ethernet over Cat5 cabling
The 10GbaseT standard, which is currently being defined by the IEEE, is still in its infancy.
But the final specification is unlikely to cover 10Gbit/s Ethernet transmission over existing Cat5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling, while Cat6 will only support 10Gbit/s over distances of approximately 55m, according to cable specialist Systimax Solutions.

10-gigabit Ethernet - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Unlike earlier Ethernet systems, 10-gigabit Ethernet (for any nontrivial distance) is so far based entirely on the use of optical fibre connections.
However, the IEEE is developing a standard for 10-gigabit Ethernet over twisted pairs (10GBaseT), using Cat-6 or Cat-7 cable and planned for approval in 2006.
Additionally, this developing standard is moving away from local area network design, with broadcasting to all nodes, towards a system which includes some elements of wide area routing.

The arrival of copper connections jump-started Gigabit Ethernet, but the same isn't likely to happen to 10Gig, as it will never travel far on copper cables.
Copper links are already available using Infiniband CX4 connectors, but that is "just an interim till 10GbaseT comes along," says Crehan.
Even then, 10Gig on copper will only be for stacking ports and connections within a datacentre or wiring closet.

networkZONE Product Review: Analog Devices XFP Optical Transceiver Chipset
There is a classic struggle in progress between copper and optical technologies to dominate the 10-Gbit/s Ethernet market.
And unlike the 1-Gbit/s market, it's not quite clear as to who's going to win since the early silicon that currently powers 10GBaseT copper is large, expensive, and power-hungry (8 W or more, vs under 4 W for optical).
ADI has taken notice of this opportunity and is helping XFP products mature as quickly as possible by using their well-proven strategy of integrating external components to save cost, development time, and precious real estate within the cramped confines of the XFP module.
