On November 6, 1944, the 10th Division was redesignated the 10th Mountain Division.
Since the 10th Mountain Division was one of the last to enter combat, it was to be used in the projected invasion of Japan.

The Korean conflict and the escalating Cold War led to reactivation of the 10th as a training division on July 1, 1948, which became the 10th Infantry Division in June 1954 when it was sent to Germany.
