110 film -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
The 110 cartridge was introduced by (Click link for more info and facts about Kodak) Kodak in 1972 together with their (Click link for more info and facts about Pocket Instamatic) Pocket Instamatic cameras.
The small (A reply of denial) negative size of 110 film makes it difficult to enlarge successfully, and for these reasons, the 110 format is associated with prints that are often rather blurry and unsharp.
The designation 110 was originally applied by (Click link for more info and facts about Kodak) Kodak to a (A list of names) roll (Click link for more info and facts about film format) film format introduced in 1898, producing 5" x 4" images.

Film format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Before that, films were just identified by the name of the cameras they were intended for.
For roll holder means film for cartridge roll holders, allowing roll film to be used with cameras designed to use glass plates.
The film format would thus be exactly the same as the size of the print -- so if you wanted large prints, you would have to use a large camera and corresponding film format.

 RELOADING 110 CASSETTES
All 110 cameras have a special cog on the edge of the film plane that reads the special 110 film perforations.
You see, 110 film is normally pre-exposed with the frame numbers BETWEEN the frames, so the film must be positioned precisely, so that the images will fall between the frame numbers.
With single perf film the image size is reduced slightly to 12x17mm instead of the 110 format of 13x17mm.

 110 film options?
Even if you can find 110 film and a used high-end camera (but forget about the original Kodak Pocket Instamatic 60, since it took a proprietary battery that is no longer made), you may have difficulty getting good processing for it.
110 film is so much smaller than a 35mm frame that you get terrible results.
Also, as 110 film comes in a cartridge, there is no way to make sure the film lies flat against the backing.

 110 cameras
The film cassette has a tab on the end to tell the camera what type of film it is, and if the camera has a small "arm" to sense the film cassette, it can be used with both film types.
There are other 110 cameras that have a switch on the exterior of the body to tell the camera what type of film is being used.
Since the camera does not use the film perforations to cock the shutter, this camera can be reloaded with 16mm film -- in 110 cassettes.

Unfortunately, 110 cameras were designed to have a maximum of two film speeds choices for the meter.
Both the Auto 110 and the Super had the necessary activating pin to be set for either ASA 80 film or ASA 400.
It may be possible to have your top of the line 110 re-calibrated, but you have to wonder if it's really worth the time and expense, especially with small APS cameras and film being readily available.

110 Pocket Instamatic film in the Frugal Photographer catalog
Photographers who use and enjoy their 110 cameras are becoming increasingly frustrated as fewer and fewer retail outlets keep 110 film in stock.
When 110 was introduced (1972), the engineering specification was that camera manufacturers would have the option of making two-speed cameras, that could automatically set themselves for either high-speed or low-speed 110 films, without manual adjustment by the photographer.
Modern 110 films are of much higher quality than the original 110s from the 1970's.

In the "Arrival of the Summer Santa" sequence, cutting is used to further one's understanding of the film by revealing connections between characters, giving the viewer additional insight into the minds of the characters, and constructing a shot rhythm which intensifies the viewer's emotional attachment to the scene.
In the sequence 'Arrival of the Summer Santa' from the film Burnt by the Sun, three short cuts, beginning with the shot of Marussya looking at her reflection and ending with Mitya revealing his true identity, convey a vast amount of relevant information to the viewer.

Is 110 film being phased out?
What is most depressing about processing 110 in my opinion is the fact that the images rarely seem to turn out with any amount of clarity, and it seems like the customer is just wasting their money.
Newer films have much better image quality, but the most of the cameras still in use are the cheap meterless fixed-focus variety that produce the "blurry, out of focus, or washed out" negatives you noted.
There were some rather good 110 cameras in the 1970s when Kodak executives still had enough vision to promote the format as a serious "system." I took thousands of Kodachrome slides with a Pocket Instamatic 60, a rangefinder camera with a fine lens at the top of Kodak's 1972 line of 110 cameras.

Ted Marcus' Virtual Light Table: Scanning 110-Format Film (and Kodachrome)
While my experience with scanning 110 film is mainly with slides, I do discuss the available options for scanning negatives, along with a few notes about the older 126 ("Instamatic") format.
Scanning 110 negatives is a much more difficult challenge than scanning slides because the 35mm strip film holders included with most scanners can't reliably accommodate 16mm film.
Minox film is 9.5mm wide, with an 8x11mm frame; you should be able to increase the size of the opening to accommodate the 16mm width and 13x17mm frame of 110 film.

 Reloading 110 Cartridges
While the Barbie Camera and other toy 110 cameras build up enough of a market to keep 110 Instamatic film in production there are currently only a handful of available emulsions and no fl and white film is available at all.
Kodak offers a 400 speed color film and Fuji a 200 speed color film, both of which are in cartridges that are keyed for 80-100 speed film.
None of today's toy cameras are sophisticated enough to sense for film speed as they are all simple cameras with only a single shutter speed and low quality plastic lenses, but in days gone by some camera manufacturers took the format seriously enough to produce some very wonderful high-end 110 cameras.

 Introduction to 110 Cameras
It appeared that the problem lies in the film traveling in channels in the cartridge itself that seemingly prevents it from being held perfectly flat at the film plane during at the moment of exposure.
There’s an interesting facet to the operation of all of the 110 cameras profiled here, in terms of their low light shooting operation: all of them, with the notable exception of the Trimlite 48, are capable of setting their shutters automatically for long time exposures in excess of several full seconds.
The original 110 film format cameras were introduced by Kodak, who invented the cartridge format.

If a film has been exposed to extreme heat, warm temperatures for a long time, or soaked in moisture, the chances of getting pictures is reduced, but never eliminated.
If the film has been exposed properly and has been kept in a refrigerator or freezer, the chances very good (90% or better) that we will be able to get an image regardless of the age of the film.

Students will view one film for each week of class, and be required to discuss that film from varying points of view (theme, plot, character development, artistic innovations, etc.) The main focus will be the development of the medium in Spain as reflected by a director's choices.
By studying the technical and artistic aspects of each film and how reality is transformed through their use, we will be able to enter into the specific obsessions of each director, and understand their reactions to their context.
Viewing the films is a compulsory part of the course, and students will need to watch the films at least once in order to take notes, and as many times as possible when preparing for discussion and reviews.
