While 110 in the Shade isn't as familiar to audiences as Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones's The Fantasticks (but then what is?), the original Broadway production was a modest success in 1963 and this 1999 studio recording makes a compelling case for its evocative and beautiful music.
110 in the Shade has long been one of my all time favorite Broadway scores ever since I saw the original production in 1963 and I have played the original LP (and compact disc of the original) hundreds of times.
Without a doubt, "110" is one of the most beautiful Broadway scores I've ever experienced.

Notes on 110 in the Shade
110 in the Shade begins its tale in a Western state in the 1930s with the hometown return of Lizzie Curry, well down the road to spinsterhood despite the best efforts of her father (H.C.) and brothers (Noah and Jimmy) to play matchmaker.
Their first Broadway show, 110 in the Shade, was nominated for a Tony Award and was successfully revived by the New York City Opera in 1993.
In addition to his work on 110 in the Shade, Nash's other Broadway collaborations were with composer Cy Coleman and lyricist Carolyn Leigh for Wildcat, starring Lucille Ball, and with composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb for The Happy Time, starring Robert Goulet.

Richard Nash's "110 in the Shade," his musicalization of his play "The Rainmaker," about a Western plain-Jane who discovers her inner beauty through an encounter with a slick-talking con man, started life as a 1952 TV show, evolved into a 1954 stage production, then became a 1956 film with Katharine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster.
The Pasadena Playhouse revival of "Shade" is well acted and sung, a pleasantly appealing drizzle of events with a book that has now become old-fashioned, preventing it from erupting into a full-blown emotional rainstorm.
Lizzie Curry (Marin Mazzie) is presented as a feisty spinster who doesn't want her two anxious brothers, boyishly gawky Jimmy (Adam Wylie) and cruelly critical Noah (Tom Wilson), and concerned dad H.C. (an impressive Lyle Kanouse) to "lasso a husband" for her.
