| | Medieval Sourcebook: First Lateran Council 1123 |
 | | For its more solemn ratification and in deference to the wish of the Archbishop of Mainz, the Pope convened (March, 1123) in Rome the First Lateran Council, the first general council to be held in the West. |
 | | Owing to the absence of the official acts, it is impossible to state with any degree of definiteness what was the procedure of the council or even what was the number of sessions held. |
 | | It was opened most probably on March 18, 1123, the third Sunday of Lent; the canons were drawn up on March 27, and the concluding session was held on April 6. |
