THX 1138 was George Lucas (United States screenwriter and filmmaker (born in 1944)) ' first full length movie (A form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement).
However, the true meaning of "THX 1138" is much more mundane: it is actually George Lucas' old phone number from the apartment where he lived as a college student.
According to an interview of George Lucas on the DVD "Short 10 Chaos", the "X" in the sound system name THX stands for "Crossover (The appropriation of a new style (especially in popular music) by combining elements of different genres in order to appeal to a wider audience)," a piece of audio processing equipment.

Although it's visually impressive, particularly in light of the fact that Lucas shot it on a shoestring budget in Northern California, THX 1138 is undermined by clunky storytelling and static pacing.
Perhaps the best way to view THX 1138 is not so much as a film, but as a peek into the mind of an ambitious filmmaker at the very beginning of his spectacular career.
The bleak, chilly world of THX 1138 effectively mirrors the fears of baby boomers coming of age in the late 1960s, when many saw conformity and corporate America as dehumanizing influences.

Based on a student short made by Lucas and Walter Murch, THX 1138 is a 1984/Brave New World-type of story of a dehumanized worker (Robert Duvall) who breaks free from the shackles of his totalitarian society.
The flipside of Star Wars' carefree adventure, THX 1138 was a downbeat experience little seen at the time, but its reputation has grown due to its famous creator and its copious merits: innovative editing and graphic design, fascinating sound montage (by Murch), and a mesmerizing look-and-feel.

THX 1138: (Lalo Schifrin) Known if only for the fact that it was director George Lucas' first large scale film, the 1971 sci-fi thriller THX 1138 is a reasonably interesting film about future oppression in 25th Century human culture.
Thus, THX 1138 has become a film to study rather than enjoy, and the same could be said of Lalo Schifrin's music for the project, too.
THX 1138 is easily a score to study as a film music historian and enthusiast, but is hardly palatable for casual listeners.

DVD Verdict Review - THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut
It's somewhat unclear whether Lucas was attempting to use THX 1138 as a frantic warning, to head off the eventual emergence of such an oppressively organized society, or whether he had already resigned himself to the inevitability of such a world.
Next is another new documentary, "Artifact from the Future: The Making of THX 1138," that offers more information about the picture itself; heavy on the cast and filmmaker's side while light on the actual production process.
It demonstrates (to this humble reviewer, anyway) that Lucas is attempting to obscure his original achievements, to deftly flip-flop from his original views, and to sneakily erase any former statements, cinematic or otherwise, that may not serve his immediate needs, be they professional, personal or (dare I say it?) political.

THX 1138 tells of a not-too-distant futuristic society, grown cold from an over-reliance on technology and prescription drugs to keep their problems, emotions, and libidos in check.
THX 1138 is the name of the character played by Robert Duvall, who gives an impressive performance here as a troubled robot-factory worker, burdened by the drugs that the oppressive government employs to manipulate him and his fellow citizens.
Tormented by the effects of the drugs and struggling with his lack of privacy, he seeks refuge in an illegal romance with his cell "mate." For this, he does prison time with detainees who are crazy, terrified, dangerous, or—worst of all—philosophical.

THX 1138: Director's Cut Movie Review - THX 1138: Director's Cut Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
Set in a grim totalitarian future, the film imagined a world where men and women live underground in a haze of mandatory sedatives and sensory deprivation.
Lucas, a child of the California flatlands who'd once wanted to become a drag racer, ends the movie the way that came most naturally: with a car chase, and one of the more thrilling ever committed to film.
But as is so often the case with his work, from "THX 1138" to "American Graffiti" to the once-dazzling and now interminable "Star Wars" saga, there's no end, just flight.

Set in an oppressive futuristic society, THX 1138 tells the story of three citizens, THX 1138, LUH 3417, and SEN 5241 attempting to escape from the society located beneath the surface of the Earth.
They are both thrown in jail where they meet SEN 5241 and plan their escape to the surface of the planet.  This is a stark, dystopian story that desperately needs to be made more accessible, but Lucas' uncompromising execution ignores that.
In conclusion, though there are some interesting individual pieces, the THX 1138 soundtrack is too disjointed and incoherent to be considered a success.  Only the most diehard fan of the film would find this CD; otherwise, like the film, this CD is too inaccessible and difficult to be recommended.
