Flemish volunteers, many members of the VNV (Flemish Nationalist Front) continued to sign up for the unit, and by September 1941 the formation was the size of a reinforced infantry battalion, and boasted five fully motorised companies.
The legion was to be subordinated to the 2nd SS (Motorised) Infantry Brigade, an international unit composed of Dutchmen, Norwegians and Latvians.

The Division was crushed under the weight and fury of the onslaught and a permanent breakthrough was achieved.
The SS volunteers were hard-pressed to contain the attack and again, breakthroughs were achieved.
Those volunteers that survived this ordeal were handed over to their countries reconstituted "Democratic" governments where they faced long prison sentences, and in some cases, torture and death.

One of the divisions that had a consistently high combat reputation within the Waffen SS was the Wiking Division.
This division was formed in December 1940 around the cadre of the Germania Regiment which originally was part of the SS-VT with the majority of volunteers coming from the occupied countries.
In March 1943 the Nordland Division was taken out of the Wiking division to form a new Division (11th SS Freiwilligen Panzergrenadier Division) and the Finnish element was also taken out of the division but was replaced by an the Estonian battalion "Narwa" and more Dutch, Belgian and German recruits.

In late 1942, it was formed as a panzergrenadier division and played an important role in the ill-fated German armoured offensive at Kursk in July 1943.
Considering the disdain shown for many of the foreign volunteer units by their German masters, the fact that a predominantly 'foriegn' division should be accorded panzer division status and equipped with the latest tanks was a tribute to the regard in which it was held.

By the autumn of 1943 the division was training in Croatia, and in January 1944 was judged to be ready for combat.
The division was finally destroyed in the battle for the city in April/May 1945.
The members of SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 23 wore the title Norge, members of the SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 24 the title Danmark, and members of SS Panzer Abteilung 11 the title Herman von Salza.

History:- Meyer's father was a professor at the University of Stockholm, volunteered for the Waffen-SS at the age of eighteen in 1941.
Serving with the "Wiking" division, he was reported as M-I-A, probably killed on 22 April 1945 at the Brenner Pass, on the borders of Austria and Italy, after his unit had been fighting advancing American forces up from Italy.
He was possibly first sent to the Germanic SS training Camp at Sennheim, Alsace, (another Swedish volunteer stated that he had served there but in a command position).

Originally written in Swedish and published shortly after war's end, it tells of the experiences of Swedish soldier Wallin, who volunteered for service and participated in the battles on the Eastern Front towards war's end.

Police Battalion (Germans from the South Tyrol) and an Hungarian Waffen S.S. Battalion.

The battles that Wallin fought in the Courland pocket are described in detail at the level of personal activities and the overwhelming strength of the Red Army in the first two chapters.
The chapters have a “freshness” that has not been filtered to be “politically correct” for our present time but tells the story as it was from the point of view of the writer.
There is reference to the impact of the pooling of resources of both the Capitalist West and Communist East against the Europe of the time.More important is the motivation hinted at in the work which kept the Germanic S.S. divisions fighting in the East when all hope of victory had gone.
