12 Memories is Travis at their most powerful, poignant and effecting.
It is an album that sees Travis explore lyrically darker themes - the forthcoming single Re- Offender, to be released in the UK on September 29th, tackles the hidden crime of domestic violence.
12 Memories is the Travis album that almost never was.

The "bonus track" (the 12th memory, so to speak) is buried in the last track, so you have to listen through two minutes of silence to get to it.
"12 Memories" takes Travis to a more cynical, gloomier place, but the chilly, twilight beauty of the British pop-rock is undeniable.
This album deserves more than 4 stars, 4 1/2 is usually the mark of a great one on amazon and this belongs at that level.

Both albums are colored by the post-9/11 malaise and anger that has engulfed much of the world.
Still, when you look at the big picture, there are still only a handful of bands out there who are willing to imbue their music with controversial messages.
With the release of 12 Memories, we can add Travis to that short but growing list.

Unfortunately, they punted it with The Invisible Band, the flimsiest Brit-rock follow-up since the Stone Roses' Second Coming, and sound-alikes Coldplay came along to steal their place.
But Travis are back on track with 12 Memories, featuring Fran Healy's boyish croon over warm U2/ Radiohead-style guitar strums.
Though the lush vocals and acoustic strumming are carried over, the songs themselves are showing a new found confidence especially on "The Beautiful Occupation" And "Re-Offender." After listening to "Peace The Fuck Out", I get the feeling that wherever he his, John Lennon is smiling.

Partially inspired by the horrific events of 9/11 and beyond, Travis' 12 Memories is, admittedly, a somewhat somber affair.
In the midst of it all, however, Fran Healy and company impart an air of hope and idealism ("Peace the F*ck Out," "How Many Hearts"), generating a luster that shines brighter with each listen.

For the non-British among us who need a Coldplay fix in between releases, it's hard to do better than picking up an album from Glasgow's own Travis.
12 Memories, their fourth outing (yes...they predate Coldplay), finds the band assuringly settled in an excellent musical space that is not as dynamically theatrical as some of their countries other exports yet more poppy, showing great Beatles influence in their tone.
Travis quietly gains depth through lead singer Francis Healy, whose effortless vocal undertone belies his cunningly strong delivery; never getting carried away but thematically consistent through the entire set.

In the Brit-pop world, Travis has contentedly played the role of well-behaved lads to the cockier Oasis and brasher Blur.
Due to the cumulative aftereffects of 9/11 and a more personal tragedy that almost found drummer Neil Primrose paralyzed from a near-fatal dive into a pool, 12 MEMORIES finds this Scottish quartet no longer content to remain prim and proper.
CMJ (10/27/03, p.10) - "...The 12 tracks here are really closer to American indie rock than what would once have been considered 'Britpop'....another strong release from a well-respected band..."

 Travis - 12 Memories : album review
Despite the few downsides to this album, there's a new-found focus to Travis, perhaps as a result of the devastating accident suffered by drummer Neil Primrose and from which he now seems, mercifully, to be fully recovered.
The production is clean and uncluttered, with just the right amount of ornamentation (such as the lovely cello part on Quicksand) and, what's more, at a shade over 43 minutes, 12 Memories certainly doesn't outstay its welcome.
How many albums can you say that about these days?
