CFB Shearwater is the birthplace and primary base for naval aviation in Canada, and plays host to 12 Wing (12 Wing Shearwater) which was formerly organized as Maritime Air Group, Canadian Armed Forces.
12 Wing has 2 operational helicopter squadrons, one stationed on the east coast at Shearwater, the other on the west coast at Patricia Bay, British Columbia (Victoria International Airport) in addition to training squadrons at Shearwater.
Shearwater's primary mission remains as a heliport for the navy's Atlantic fleet.

 DND/CF : News Release : Department of National Defence Transfers Surplus Lands at Shearwater to Canada Lands Company
Shearwater (NS) -- The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, and Kathy Milsom, President and CEO of Canada Lands Company (CLC), jointly announced today the transfer of surplus DND property to CLC for redevelopment.
This land transfer is in accordance with the 1994 Federal Budget decision to reduce 12 Wing Shearwater.
The helicopter operations remain at 12 Wing Shearwater, while fixed wing operations have been relocated to 14 Wing Greenwood.

The new training facility is part of the contract awarded to Sikorsky for 20 years of in-service support for the H92 helicopter.

 SR 111 Supporting Technical Information-Wreckage Recovery
After a preliminary freshwater rinse, the recovered wreckage was transported directly to the jetty at 12 Wing Shearwater by CCG ships.
The material was received at the jetty in 12 Wing Shearwater, freshwater washed, and transported to "A" Hangar for identification, sorting, and storage and material layout.
After exploring several options for a higher volume method of recovery for the substantial amount of remaining wreckage, it was decided to contract a lifting vessel that used a large bucket to capture the aircraft wreckage from the underwater debris pile and lift it onto a barge moored alongside.

406 Maritime Operational Training Squadron, located at 12 Wing Shearwater in Nova Scotia, is the home of basic Sea King helicopter training in Canada.
The ultimate mission of the Squadron is to provide trained and qualified technicians and aircrew for operational employment by the maritime helicopter community.

HOTEF located at 12 Wing Shearwater is responsible for all operational testing of new equipment and operating procedures on the CH-124 Sea King.
Currently, 12 Wing, and the CF in general, eagerly await the arrival of the latest Sikorsky acquisition: the CH-148 Cyclone.
Delivery of the first aircraft will be in just over three years with the remaining helicopters delivered at a rate of one per month to a total of twenty-eight.

As part of 12 Wing Shearwater, 443 moved to Patricia Bay in the ‘80’s, to be renamed as 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron in 1995.

Therefore be it resolved that this House recognize the work of Col. Joe Hincke as commander of 12 Wing Shearwater and welcome the new commander, Lt. Col.
In the Spring one wing of the school was closed.

The Eagles are mainly stationed out of 2 Wing, Toronto, Ontario, Canada but they are also based throughout Canada in 19 Wing Comox, CFB Edmonton, CFB Dundurn, CFB Shilo, CFB Ottawa, CFB Halifax, 1 and 11 Wings St Hubert and Montreal, 12 Wing Shearwater, and elsewhere throughout Canada and the world.
These wings will fold into the armour when not in use, but will immediately snap out when activated.
The leading edges of the wings are bladed but will automatically be turned around to the dull side when not in a combat situation.

Cold Lake, AB -- Starting September 8, 2005, 4 Wing Cold Lake will be the first Canadian military establishment to take advantage of a new technology to help protect the environment by introducing a biodiesel fuel trial program.
Drew Craig, 4 Wing Environmental Officer, says that lessons learned from the program will be shared within National Defence and offered to other organizations interested in starting their own biodiesel trial.
Although the short term benefits will be mostly on the environment facet of the program, it is expected that this program will become a long-term cost-saving program, as the price of renewable energy is not tied in with the cost of petrol.
