Twelve-step program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A twelve-step program (or programme) is a fellowship which aims at the recovery of its members from the consequences of an addiction, a compulsion, or another harmful influence on their lives, with the help of the Twelve Steps.
The Twelve Steps were essentially a rewriting of the 6 steps of the Oxford Group with whom Wilson had contact.
The Twelve Steps were eventually matched with Twelve Traditions, a set of guidelines for running individual groups and a sort of constitution for the program (eg, AA) as a whole.

Step two requires faith and hope that there is an answer to the drink and drug problem and that it can be found at Treatment Referral.
Step three is a personal journey of finding a power greater than yourself that can be relied upon for a solution.
The steps continue and the process creates a revitalized individual who is no longer running away from reality and doesn't hesitate to take responsibility for his or her actions.

References for the 12 Step Program
The beginning of twelve step programs is usually traced back to 1935, when Bill W. and Dr. Bob began first meeting together and with other alcoholics and began using a 12 step process for recovery from alcoholism.
Because of the tremendous growth of 12 step programs since that time, there are a great deal number of books, websites, treatment facilities and other resources related to the 12 step program.
The 12 Promises come from the A.A. Big Book and state the promises that are offered to those who sincerely work the 12 steps of recovery.

 12 Step Program | 12 Traditions | 12 Promises | Twelve Step Metaphysics
There are 36 key elements to the 12 step program (3 sets of 12), composed of exactly nine core concepts (3 X 3).
While the traditions are applied specifically to the 12 step program organization, full recovery is not possible without these principles being carried over into any individual's society as a whole.
While the twelve step program is precisely layed out as a system of recovery, anyone can utilize a very quick metaphysical check to identify the exact nature of any current problem.

 The 12-Step Program
program is a structured method of journal-writing that is based upon the principles of holistic depth psychology developed by Dr. Ira Progoff in the 1950s and 1960s.
12) By this time it is assumed that one has had a "spiritual awakening as the result of these steps." It is then time to carry the message of recovery to those still suffering and to "practice these principles" (outlined in the steps) in all of one’s affairs.
The twelve steps, which are the recovery tools of Alcoholics Anonymous and other programs patterned after it, include two written inventory steps, and there are many twelve-step guide booklets available designed to promote inner awareness in the recovering person through a question and answer format.

 Perrspectives: George W. Bush's 12-Step Program
He quickly cruised from Step 1 through Step 7, including admitting powerlessness over alcohol, turning his life over to God, and humbly asking Him to remove his shortcomings.
There is, of course, so much more, with the Iraq WMD fraud, double-speak on the environment, the tax give-away to the wealthy, a staggering budget deficit, a moribund economy, and the attempted merging of church and state, just to name a few.
Step 1 is to admit we have a problem.

Deflating the Ego Through the-12 Step Program
The first three steps of this program, i.e., admitting we were powerless over a substance, recognizing a Power greater than ourselves, and handing our will and our lives over to the care of God (or other higher power) do not come easy to a practicing egomaniac.
Admitting to wrongs (in Step 5) is a clear admission of imperfection, something that must, by definition, deflate the ego of those with a bloated sense of importance.
Despite these concerns, Milam and Ketcham agree that AA is "far and away the most effective program in the world for helping alcoholics to stay sober." It likely works as well as it does because Steps 4 through 9 are designed to both deflate the ego and assist in the renewal of self-esteem.

Leftists ready to recover must use what recovering alcoholics call rigorous honesty to rid themselves of the habit of “dual think.” The fourth step in AA is a fearless moral inventory, and the folks on the far left who dare to take a fearless intellectual inventory will realize that their dual-think positions are untenable.
The 12th step in the AA program is to carry the message of recovery to others.
It is a marvelous step because in doing so, you cement the fact that you have finally arrived at some place of clarity and are strong enough to spread the message.

 AlterNet: A Progressive 12-step Program
To escape it we will need our own version of a 12-step program, beginning with the recognition that we feel powerless in the face of the Bush aggression, and that this has profoundly impacted our lives, made them to some extent, unmanageable.
In Alcoholics Anonymous the classic formulation of the second step is, "[We] came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." Many progressives are spiritual and accept the concept of a higher power, but others are secular and reluctant to embrace this notion.
The AA fourth step is, "[We] Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves." Progressives have been so focused on the evils of the Bush Administration that we often fail to acknowledge our share of the blame for the situation we are in.
