Twelve-step program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Twelve Steps were essentially a rewriting of the 6 steps of the Oxford Group with whom Wilson had contact.
The Twelve Steps were eventually matched with Twelve Traditions, a set of guidelines for running individual groups and a sort of constitution for the program (eg, AA) as a whole.
The Steps can be recognized in the Oxford Group teachings Wilson received from Rowland Hazard and Ebby Thacher in late 1934 and early 1935, but neither the Oxford Group nor early A.A. in New York or Akron had any "steps" at all.

12 Step healing modalities and methods have changed and evolved, as the program has--many of you might not be aware of this, and so you might not reach out and investigate something that can be of great help to you, or someone you know, or someone you love.
Thankfully, the 12 Step model itself changes and evolves with every new group which forms, and group members are more than willing and able to change the language, and the environment, to make everyone feel welcome and at home.
The Standard 12 Steps - Though they vary depending on the group, these are the basic 12 Steps in recovery.

Newcomers are not asked to accept or follow these Twelve Steps in their entirety if they feel unwilling or unable to do so.
They will usually be asked to keep an open mind, to attend meetings at which recovered alcoholics describe their personal experiences in achieving sobriety, and to read A.A. literature describing and interpreting the A.A. program.
