		The Magna Carta, as "1215" illustrates, was a sort of pressure valve, a stopgap measure to mollify potential enemies of the crown by instilling a series of checks to royal decree.

		Letters patent of the King, dated 25 May 1215, on the eve of Magna Carta, refer to this agreement and request that the castle should be transferred from de Cornhill's control to another royal custodian.
		They were also to swear, as de Cornhill had done, to hand the castle back to the archbishop when the term of the agreement was up, or sooner if peace with the barons be restored in the kingdom.
