The 3 stage Ariane was designed as a direct launch to GTO vehicle and the first version, Ariane 1, was launched 11 times between 1979 and 1986.
Ariane 2 and 3 were variants, which increased the launch mass to orbit, with the Ariane 3 the first to carry strap-on boosters.
The Ariane 4 is the current version, with the Ariane 5 scheduled for operational launches in 1997-98.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Probe pushes on to lunar target
The unmanned probe was put into its initial Earth orbit after a flawless launch on an Ariane 5 vehicle from the Kourou spaceport.
Now engineers at the European Space Agency's (Esa) operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany, are running tests on the probe's electronics and scientific instruments to make sure they survived the shaking they received as the Ariane hurtled skywards.
The ion drive was switched on at 1225 GMT on Tuesday.

spacetoday.net: Weather delays final Ariane 4 launch again
The launch of Intelsat 907 on an Ariane 44L booster was scheduled for Friday morning at 2 am EST (0700 GMT), but strong upper-level winds forced Arianespace to delay the launch until at least Saturday.
The launch, when it does occur, will be the last for the Ariane 4 series of boosters which date back to the late 1980s.
Despite the failure of the first Ariane 5 ECA booster in December, Arianespace is planning a launch of a "generic" Ariane 5 booster — unaffected by the engine problems with the ECA version — in March.

The European Space Agency approved plans to fund development of a global positioning system and Ariane booster upgrades during a meeting in Scotland this week.
ESA ministers also approved funding of upgrades to the Ariane 5 that will increase its payload capacity and reduce launch costs.
In a signal of growing tensions with NASA, ESA elected to withhold 60 percent of its planned funding contribution to the project over the next five years until NASA fulfills all its obligations to the station, including support for a full seven-person crew.

[Name]- Withycombe says of Ariadne: "Â…The name was borne by an obscure Phrygian martyr, and in the forms 'Arianna' and 'Ariane' has been used in Italy and France respectively.
It has been used occasionally in England of late years, probably with no reference to the saint." I can't find any documentation in my sources that 'Ariane' was used as an English name in period.
The female form of the name may have survived in France until the Norman Conquest to be brought to England but this is speculation.

A radio beam guidance update system was introduced in December 1944, which in tests produced a 2 km CEP.
In reality, in the campaign against Britain, 518 rockets were recorded as falling in the Greater London Air Defence Zone of 1225 fired, implying an average CEP of 12 km.
Part of this lack of accuracy was attributable to a skilful British disinformation campaign.
