Fugazi - 13 Songs: Reviews, Track Listing, Audio Clips, and more ||| Music.com
13 Songs [+] (a combination of the Fugazi [+] and Margin Walker [+] EPs) is usually amongst the first records that spring to mind when defining alternative rock.
Most of these songs are anthems of the self rather than a rallying cry of accusation or unification, with "Waiting Room" and "Suggestion," serving as two examples.
The relentless ska/reggae-inflected drive of the song is equally effective, as Ian MacKaye [+] tells everyone listening to get off their behinds and do what they want.

Bob Drake: 13 Songs and a Thing: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
In fact, where you might expect his songs to erupt into classical arcana, his underlying forms appear to be closer to traditional folk, albeit murder ballads and nursery tale night beasts.
13 Songs and a Thing is Drake's fifth solo record, and continues in a similarly eclectic vein as last year's excellent The Skull Mailbox and Other Horrors.
However, where that album was a song-cycle of short stories, 13 Songs doesn't have a running narrative to tie it together.

 13 Songs - Cd
The music is catchy and quite funky on a lot of songs, but with punk bite to spare.
Seven years after I bought it, and eleven years after its initial release, "13 Songs" is still one of my top picks when I want some thought-provoking rock.
13 songs was my introduction to Fugazi but by no means my last (I had heard Waiting Room somewhere before).

13 Songs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
13 Songs brings together the two 1989 EPs that first introduced the group's unique hybrid of hardcore, funk, and art-rock.
The first half of the CD is especially strong with Waiting Room starting things off with that great 24 second intro then stopping.....then grabbing you and bringing you with on a 40 minute punk experience.
The first seven songs (first EP) should be mandatory listening for anyone who claims to like rock.

 TWAS 13: Guided by Voices
Just reading the song titles is enough to clue you in to this; where the first two albums have the occasional entry like "A Visit to the Creep Doctor", most of the titles of their songs aren't themselves particularly bizarre.
The song writing is astonishingly inspired (and significantly more varied than on any one earlier release), the sound fascinating and unfailingly appropriate, the pace unrelenting.
GbV songs are frequently concise, even some of the great ones, but they nearly always seem developed to some logical point; even if that point is just one verse and 32 seconds, it's usually a tight verse.

Nude as the News: Fugazi: 13 Songs
Songs continue after the singers are done hollering.
As the first Fugazi song to be truly elevated somewhere polemical lyrics alone couldn’t take it, “Provisional” was not surprisingly reprised for first LP Repeater.
As the song builds to the chorus, where the bass and guitars each play hardcore changes — but not the same ones — you can hear the germs of the rest of Fugazi’s illustrious career.

Blur : 13 - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Blur's penitence for Brit-pop continues with the aptly named 13, which deals with star-crossed situations like personal and professional breakups with Damon Albarn's longtime girlfriend, Justine Frischmann of Elastica, and the group's longtime producer, Stephen Street.
When Albarn and crew risk some honesty, 13 shines: on "Tender," Albarn is battered and frail, urged by a lush gospel choir to "get through it." His confiding continues on "1992," which alludes to the beginning -- and ending -- of his relationship with Frischmann.
Musically, the saddest songs on 13 are also the clearest, mixing electronic and acoustic elements in sleek but heartfelt harmony.

CD Baby: PETER KWIEK: Killing Again (13 Songs about our way of life)
These 13 songs are dead-on, often hilarious skewerings of our fabulously self-centered society.
The subject matter of these songs could make them all into impossible-to-listen-to harangues, but Kwiek and his merry band of musical pranksters at the U.S. Ministry of Propaganda have fashioned pop arrangements for these songs that make them not only palatable, but actually sort of hummable.
In the folk category songs like these are usually referred to as "short shelf-life songs", but some of these are so tuneful and funny that they may endure.

Combining the band's first two EPs, Fugazi's 13 SONGS is nothing less than a landmark hardcore album.
And though the quartet would become known for its anti-corporate/consumerism stance, 13 SONGS is all about unapologetically intense music.
Fugazi has broken free of hard-core's conventions...the music is all muscle and bone; songs riff, blare, riff, pause and crunch, then stop dead, as terse and Apollonian as a string quartet.

 Punknews.org | Fugazi - 13 Songs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The first half easily beats out the second half in terms of melody, texture and memorable songs (in my humble opinion), but that's not to say that the second half is lacking.
Therefore, "Burning" is trickier stuff, what with Guy's cryptic words sung in his slippery range, the almost eerie swirls of feedback and guitar noise serving as the perfect nuance.
Following this group of songs, the second half seems to be, again, a slight step back after the consistency of the first, but it is strong in its own right as well.
