		Founded in 1607; by investors and volunteers of the Virginia Company of London in search of wealth; key members of the colony were John Smith who established peace with the Indians as well as John Rolfe who introduced tobacco enabling the colonists to begin producing wealth.
		In 1664, the English forces the Dutch to surrender their colony and King Charles II gives much of the area to his brother James, Duke of York (hence the name New York).
