So many bands in recent years have changed styles, incorporated new elements as well as the demise of many class acts would leave the genre listeners desperate and craving more, wondering if the fact that their scene is starting to stagnate is a sign that the end to the scene might be approaching.
No, 1349 are a part of the new era of Black Metal, taking the reins from "Battles In The North" style IMMORTAL, who often played their music as if they were headed towards war atop frozen mountains with frozen ice winds freezing their frosty flesh.
1349 could have easily fallen into the trap of allowing each song to sound identical to one another ridden with genre clichés, but each track is identifiable from one another, which leads me to believe that these coal-cored boys have what it takes to last in their overtly overpopulated scene.

Even though 1349 is likely most known for containing the insane drum talents of Frost from Satyricon fame, with their 3rd full length release, "Hellfire" licks at the digital walls of this disc as if feeding off of the intensity and a blisteringly caustic drum and guitar tone.

 Rough Edge: 1349 CD Reviews
1349 plays wickedly heavy and at a super-velocity pace nearly 90 percent of the time and it’s not that bad.
However, when the band slows down it adds an icy chill to the proceedings that give the overall impact a bigger punch.
The band stretches out the length of their songs more than the average necro fl metal band — and to my ears that’s always a good thing so long as the band mixes the riffs enough and on that count 1349 succeed.

When the self titled EP was written, 1349 had nothing to ride on and as a result, a significant amount of effort was put into writing it.
After that however, it seems as though they’re simply riding on the laurels of that EP, as well as the attention that having Frost in the band is bringing them.
Every once and a while, something interesting comes along and there are a few solid tracks, but after the more impressive material that’s come from this band, I can’t help but feel disappointed in the material that they’ve released since.

S: 1349 was the year the Black Death (a bubonic plague) struck Norway, leaving 2/3 of the population dead and effectively ending the golden age, putting us under foreign rule until 1905.
S: I believe that 1349 has something unique, since our music is a selfish beast, we made our records because we were tired of boring, synth-infested "Black Metal" and albums with only a few songs that were good.
I also believe that in the beginning many people only paid attention to 1349 because we have Frost on drums, but it seems that when people have heard 1349 they understand that it is not just a Frost side-project.

Such a delivery is always impressive and interesting as a band detonates with chaotic abandon, but in the event of such an attack, the blast radius often leaves no "song" worthy content to be found.
Musically, the band seems to have taken more time in the studio - the drums are tighter, the vocals better performed, and the solos further improved from their already impressive past.
With the commercial crap that once decent bands of this genre like In Flames are churning out at present, it's up to hungrier young bands like The Mandrake to keep the torch alight, and with "the burning horizon at the end of dawn" The Mandrake have accomplished just that.

There is no time for individuals to take a breath during 1349’s “Hellfire”; each of the drum hits and guitar lines are so fast that even the individual that knows this type of death and thrash metal will not be able to discern where one line ends and begins.
Different tracks show different facets of 1349; “To Rottendam” is an example of the skill the band has on subtly changing a riff a hundred or so times in an almost-imperceptible manner.
