The key to being Numidia is just run, get as far away from Africa as you can, take some islands if you can for they can provide good economic bases.
I played for Numidia and didn't find any problems except the fact I had to fight 5 full stacks per turn couple of times at the beginning.
Personally I found to play Numidia too easy since they can crush any AI army and after 5th level javelinmen can hold heavy cavalry charge and then massacre them, it is insane.
