 M JAN 14
The reign of Richard II (1377-1399), like the reign of Queen Elizabeth two centuries later, is rightly recognized as a period of extraordinarily rich literary production in England.
The 1380s also saw the rise of heresy and continued reversals in the war with France.
This term we’ll read a broad selection of the literary work of the 1380s, and we’ll try to think about it in terms of and in the context of its turbulent era.

LES TRES RICHES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY
They came from Nimwegen in what is now Flanders but were generally referred to as Germans.
Very little is known about them; they are believed to have been born in the late 1370s or 1380s and were born into an artistic family, their father being a wood sculptor and their uncle being an artist working variously for the French Queen and for the Duc de Bourgogne.
They seem to have followed in their uncle's footsteps and by 1402 had entered into the service of the Duc de Bourgogne as artists.

With a history dating back to the 1380s, it is hardly surprising that this heavily thatched inn hides some secrets.
Legend has it that an underground passage leads down to the shore; it would have been used by the wreckers and smugglers who formerly roamed the wild coastline that looks out across the Bristol Channel.

 First Impression from the President
Mooney matched Pinkhurst’s handwriting in the manuscripts to his signature on an oath he took when he joined the Scriveners’ Company of London shortly after 1392.
With this identification, Mooney has learned important facts about the scribe, including evidence that Chaucer may have supervised Pinkhurst when he made the first copies of the author’s prose translation of Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy (Boece) and Troilus and Criseyde, written in the 1380s.
Pinkhurst also may have been working for Chaucer in the late 1380s and in the 1390s when he was writing The Canterbury Tales, Mooney says.

The two styles, however, are closely related, and a precise division between them is difficult to make.
The earliest work on the manuscript, the first volume and the opening folios of the second volume, is generally attributed to Giovannino and was probably painted in the late 1380s, before he joined the payroll of the Milan Cathedral works.
The light, bright colours, richly gilded with liquid and burnished gold, give the pages a scintillating appearance.
