Topic: 13th root

13th root - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Extracting the 13th root of a number is a famous category for the mental calculation world records.
One is that the 13th root of a number is much smaller: a 13th root will have approximately 1/13th the number of digits.
Further, the last digit of the 13th root is always the same as the last digit of the power.

Mental calculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is practiced as a sport in the Mind Sports Olympiad and the most famous challenge is the 13th root.
For example, if we are asked to find the square root of 15, we could start with the knowledge that the root of 16 is 4.
The square root of 15 is now estimated as 3.9 − 0.0025 or 3.8875.

The suspended 2nd chord, abbreviated "sus2," is a chord comprised of a root, 2nd, and 5th.
The third chord is a C6, using the notes C (root), E (3rd), A (6th), C (root) - notice that the 5th is absent from this version of the C6 chord.
Therefore, the notes often emphasized in an eleventh chord are the root, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th, but it's ok to include the 3rd in the chord as long as it doesn't sound too bad.

Although 13th roots are the official tasks as integer roots, for the mental calculation world records and with objective reasons, many people do not know the geniality of 13th roots.
The easiest example is the 13th root of 8192, which is 2.
It gives the 2-digit endings of the 13th powers of the 2-digit endings, not divisible by 10[in the case of ending 0, write 0 and forget the 13 trailing 0 of the power to continue the process].

All you need to do is count up from the root note using notes of the scale, and if you end up on the 5th note of the scale you have a 5th, if you're on the 7th note, you've got a 7th.
The root (1st) is most likely to be doubled, but you can double up on the 1st, 3rd or 5th, although you will get subtly different sounds.
You could also include the 9th in an 11th chord, or the 9th and 11th in a 13th chord, but on a guitar this is usually not done.

Just as there are 3 types of 7th chord (7th, min 7th, maj 7th) you end up with 3 types for 9th 11th and 13th chords by simply adding to the basic 7th chord.
If you have a voicing of a 13th chord that *also* has a 9th or 11th in it, then that's fine : it's still a 13th chord, but most of the time these chords are just a normal 7th with an added note (9th, 11th or 13th).

 What's the 13th root of a 100-digit number? - DEC 1, 2004
A 38-year-old with degrees in psychology, education and computer science needed only 11.8 sec to calculate the 13th root of a 100-digit number in his head, setting a new record.
But his feat will not be immortalised in fl and white in the Guinness Book of World Records, because the book no longer recognises root calculations of random numbers due to the difficulty of standardising the challenge, spokesman Sam Knight said.
'Some numbers are easier to root than others - we are working on a way to standardise this,' he said in a call from London.

There are only about eight million whole numbers that are the 13th root of 100 digit numbers and we are told elsewhere in the story that the solver has prodigious memory skills - has he got a mnemonic for finding the answer?
Roger Boyes (the author of the piece) doesn't seem to know much about maths - he thinks that a scientific calculator can be used to solve this problem - one with 100 digits that is (it'd be as wide as my desk).
Also he suggests that a 100 digit number chosen at random has an integer 13th root - when in fact most don't (most of the roots would be irrational and therefore incalculable).

All records in the area of high order integer roots have been broken by the calculation of the 13th root of a 100-digit number in 13 s or 3 s.
His first world record was the calculation of the 13th root of a 100-digit number, in 13.55 s.
The ultimate category is the 13th root of a 200-digit number, his favorite calculation.

The posted article reported how Dr. Gert Mittring, who has mastered mental calculations to a unimaginable level, managed to give the correct answer to extracting the 13th root of a 100 digit number in front of an audience and 2 umpires who selected the number at random.
If you are a mathematician, you probably have access to superior software such as Mathematica that will let you get the 13th root in a flash.
