The command of the RNZAF changed on 25 February 1999 when Air Commodore Donald Hamilton became Chief of Air Staff in the rank of Air Vice-Marshal, and the previous Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal Carey Adamson was promoted to Air Marshal in the appointment of Chief of Defence Force.

Squadron standards are awarded by order of the Sovereign to a RNZAF squadron after completion of 25 years of service, or having earned the Sovereign's appreciation for especially outstanding operations.
14 Squadron's standard was approved by Her Majesty the Queen in April 1969 and presented at Ohakea on April 25, 1971.

RNZAF P-40s were successful in air combat against the Japanese during intense fighting in the Pacific Ocean Areas theatre from 1942 until 1944, when they were replaced by F4Us.
A Fw 200C-3 bomber overflew the base on August 14, 1942 and was destroyed by Shaffer and a P-38F of the 1st Fighter Group.
USAAF P-40 squadrons were massacred on the ground and slaughtered in the air by Japanese fighters like the Ki-43 "Oscar" and the A6M Zero in the first major battles at Pearl Harbor, the Philippines and in the Dutch East Indies.

Initially the squadron was based at the civil aerodrome (Ross Smith Avenue) but moved to the new base on 12 June 1940 where, with a full compliment of 11 Hudson aircraft, took over coastal and shipping reconnaissance patrols.
In August 1944 the Squadron was transferred to Gove, Northern Territory for anti-submarine patrols and shipping escort duties, (One of these aircraft was on display at Gove untill 1995 when it was bought to Darwin by the current No. 13 (City of Darwin) Squadron RAAF Active Reserve and the RAN for possible restoration).
The Squadron was granted the Freedom of the City of Darwin on 22 April 1994 and proudly marched through the streets of the city on the same day.

A disbandment parade was held at Ohakea on December 13, 2001 for 2, 14, and 75 Squadrons.
RNZAF 'ZK' roundels (blue ring, white inner with red kiwi) were carried on the fuselage, upper port wing and lower starboard wing.
Colourful squadron markings (the tiki and hammers badge on a white oval between bars carrying yellow diamonds on a red background) were carried on the engine intakes.

The RNZAF was formed from New Zealand components of the British Royal Air Force, becoming an independent force in 1923, although many RNZAF aircrew continued to serve in the Royal Air Force until the end of the 1940s.
At its peak in the Pacific, the RNZAF had 13 squadrons of Corsair fighters, six of Venturas, two each of Catalinas and Avengers, two of C-47 Dakotas, as well as No 25 in Dauntless dive bombers, mixed transport and communications squadrons, a flight of Short Sunderlands and nearly 1000 training machines.
The Bell 47 introduced the helicopter to the RNZAF and the Bell UH-1 Iroquois of 3 Squadron went to the Sinai and East Timor, while Westland Wasp and Kaman SH-2 Seasprite helicopters were also operated by the squadron.

John Kilian, born in Queenstown on 23 June 1911, joined the RNZAF in September 1937 and was subsequently transferred to the RAF in 1941.
He was with 122 Squadron until November 1942, when his operational tour ended and, after a rest, was given command of 504 Squadron in March 1943.
He moved to command 14 Squadron, RNZAF in May 1945 and led it until the Japanese surrender.

The Squadron was reformed in 1965 at RNZAF Base Auckland (Hobsonville) where it became the Air Force's only Squadron to operate helicopters.

The Army's initial contribution to the Reserve, a Special Air Service Squadron commanded by Major Frank Rennie which formed part of 22nd SAS Regiment, was particularly suited for such operations, which now consisted of seeking out the guerrillas in their jungle sanctuary.
During 1957 the squadron operated in Negri Sembilan in an area dubbed Mountainous by the guerrillas, between the towns of Seremban, Kuala Pilah, and Tampin.

The commanding officer was Squadron Leader J.J. De Willimof, DFC, who had served with distinction in the Pacific, firstly with No.15 Squadron, then after 5 tours of duty, had commanded No.23 Squadron from 1944 to 1945.
The Squadron's ground training was put in the capable hands of Squadron Leader J.E.Duncan (known to all and sundry as "The Bull" due to his voice!) who was the Chief disciplinarian of the Air Force.
A diversion during this period, was the arrival and display of the first jet aircraft for the RNZAF, a Meteor F Mk.3 ably presented by Squadron Leader R.M.Mckay.

No 2 Squadron is the RNZAF Skyhawk training unit and would provide reinforcement of aircraft, pilots and ground crew to No 75 Squadron in the event of a full-scale combat deployment.

Some 3,700 men, mainly of 14 Brigade, landed on the island of Vella Lavella already partly occupied by Americans, on 18 September to begin a difficult operation of patrolling through dense jungle and barge-hopping from bay to bay to clear nearly 1,000 Japanese from the northern half of the island.

Both Skyhawk squadrons, No 2 and No 75, as well as No 14 Squadron which operates the Aermacchis will be disbanded leaving approximately 700 personnel to be redeployed or made redundant.
The RNZAF provides approximately 1,350 Skyhawk hours per annum to the RAN under a contract which is effectively "cost neutral" to the RNZAF.
Currently the RNZAF is initiating a programme to either replace or extend the life of both the five-strong C-130H and 14-strong UH-1.

Enlisting in the RNZAF, he was posted to Singapore on completion of his training, initially to join 205 Squadron, RAF--a flyingboat unit.
Instead he was trained by 21 RAAF Squadron to fly one of the newly arrived Brewster Buffalo fighters, and was then posted in March 1941 to 67 Squadron which was just forming; from there he moved to the new 243 Squadron when 67 was sent to Burma.
During his final engagement on 1 February he was shot up by two fighters as he was claiming a third shot down, and was wounded in the arm by a bullet and in the hip by a cannon shell fragment.

Flt Lt McIntyre launched the first 14 Sqn offensive leading a formation of Vampires to strike CT positions on the 1st of May 1955.This Squadron was to be replaced by 75 Sqn flying leased ŒCanberra¹ Bombers in 1958 as part of 224 Group FEAF.
It was in 1970 the RNZAF presence with 41 Squadron changed from Changi Air Base to Tengah where it was to become the support Unit for the Battalion using Strikemaster Jet Trainers and Iroquois Helicopters replacing the ageing Vampires.

The squadron was based at RAF Tengah (Singapore) and became involved in active service during the Malayan emergency with their first bombing raid being carried out on 30 September 1959.
14 Squadron was based at RNZAF Ohakea in New Zealand and Bill Smiley, a B(I)12 pilot with the squadron, has kindly submitted some pictures of the squadron from his time with them.
In late 1962, the OCU was incorporated into the squadron as "C" Flight giving 14 Squadron a strength of ten B(I)12s and two T.13s.

In 1966 the unit received the Wasp HAS.1, which it operated and maintained on behalf of the RNZN until 1977, when the Naval Support Flight (still within 3 Squadron, RNZAF) was formed and this continued the Wasp operations.
Part of the squadron's tasking is as a Force Element in response to the NZDF Rotary Wing Transport Force; another part is to maximise the effectiveness of the RNZN through its Naval Support Flight.

The RAAF has two hawk squadrons one in RAAF Williamtown the other in RAAF Pearce (Western Australia), our visit was to 76 squadron based in Williamtown.
Both squadrons have/had the same role (basic jet fighter training) and both aircraft (the Hawk and the Aermacchi) were similiar in design, layout and shape.
After lunch we were suposed to visit a Hornet squadron but things changed and we were unable to visit.
