 Medieval Era
The various names for the period between A.D. 500 and 1500--the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, and the Medieval Era--all reflect its position between the cultural achievements of the Roman Empire, which fell in A.D. 476, and the flourishing of art and science in the Renaissance, which began around the 1400s.
In addition to Gothic architecture and influential philosophy, this period produced a number of literary masterpieces, including the epic poems Beowulf and Song of Roland, highly unrealistic romances such as those about King Arthur and his knights, and short, often humorous works by writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer.
While the accomplishments of this period may not match those of adjacent eras, they nevertheless are significant.

 Renaissance Music
In the early musical Renaissance (1400s), there was one dominant style, that of the Flemish (in what is now known as the Netherlands and Belgiuim) and French composers, but by about 1550, other national styles became distinct again, starting with Italy.
Renaissance musicians played organ, harpsichord, sackbut (an early trombone), cornetto (a small, slightly curved trumpet without a bell), recorder, flute, shawm (an early oboe), krummhorn (a quiet, kazoo-like double-reed instrument shaped like a J), dulcian (an early one-piece bassoon), harp, viol (an early violin-like instrument with frets), and a variety of drums, bells, and cymbals.
Musical styles moved from medieval to Renaissance late, beginning around 1450 and lasting until 1600, when the baroque music era started.
