| | Renaissance Music |
 | | In the early musical Renaissance (1400s), there was one dominant style, that of the Flemish (in what is now known as the Netherlands and Belgiuim) and French composers, but by about 1550, other national styles became distinct again, starting with Italy. |
 | | Renaissance musicians played organ, harpsichord, sackbut (an early trombone), cornetto (a small, slightly curved trumpet without a bell), recorder, flute, shawm (an early oboe), krummhorn (a quiet, kazoo-like double-reed instrument shaped like a J), dulcian (an early one-piece bassoon), harp, viol (an early violin-like instrument with frets), and a variety of drums, bells, and cymbals. |
 | | Musical styles moved from medieval to Renaissance late, beginning around 1450 and lasting until 1600, when the baroque music era started. |
